After LiveUpdate received an Auto-Protect Error

Hi,

I have NAV 2002 & I am having the same problems.

Any solution found?

Regards

Running NAV 2003 on a XP SP3 set up that could benifit from an upgrade to at least Vista, but saving money for a complete rebuild up to a new 64 bit system with 7 on it. Autoprotect was shut off and today when it was supposed to scan said critical error cannot scan. tried uninstal and reinstall, updates to current definitions and same thing. Hope they get this fixed soon, cannot really afford to get new AV software right now and I don't trust the free ones out there.

I updated one of my installs by downloading newer definitions (05/14/10) and using the intelligent updater instead of the automatic update feature or the update tab within the app.

Same problem.. Newer definitions didn't solve the problem. The problem started with the 05/11/10 update.

It seems that using the intelligent updater was a mistake. Now the app is stuck on "Refreshing" when going to the status page. I don't think it did that before.

Bummer..

For the script error, try the suggestions/instructions from the following Symantec Support Article:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sunset-c2002kb.nsf/docid/2001122553444766

If the Norton product interface shows "Refreshing", you can try registering the jscript.dll file:

Let us know if this is helpful.

Thanks.. I didn't do anything with the 1st link.. I have 2003, not 2002 and it was pretty specific you need to choose the solution for your exact error. I am not getting script errors.

The 2nd link in regards to registering the jscript.dll, I did that, got a success message but the app still sticks on the "refreshing" in the status page. You can not close the program either. Task manager won't close it. I have to reboot the rig and then there is a program that wont close so the rig can reboot.

I get this when the rig boots:

5613i059EC32F26A755B7

I get this when the rig shuts down (or won't shut down as it were):

5615i617C6B8F64B291E3

Funny thing though.. The rig is crawling, real slow and it appears the app is still working. In an effort to solve this problem, I restored a drive image from a few days ago. No error till after the 05/11/10 update. I also had to do a windows update to restore updates installed since the drive image. NAV wanted to stop some the the update scripts.

I suppose I could start posting some debug info but I am pretty sure symantec can reproduce this problem. Any rig I had the pleasure of servicing this week running xp & nav 2003 or system works 2003 has the same problem.

I need to stop trying to fix this and let symantec come up with a fix. I am just screwing up these rigs and my client(s) have their feet tapping.

I've just been turning off the automatic updates and restoring to anything before the 5/11 update.  Not a solution but at least NAV will run until they have a solution.

How do yo restore to an earlier one? I checked Symantec's FTP site and they don't have anything before 5/13.

I restored the whole drive to an earlier image of a few weeks ago.  I'll take a look if I have one of the older intelligent updaters here that I could get to you...

I managed to find an earlier definitions updater for 5/10, but it won't revert the definitions. I still wind up with the 5/14 definitions.

Edit: nevermind. I had to go into C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs and edit definfo.dat to tell it that the current defs were dated 5/9 and the previous ones dated 5/8. This let the 5/10 installer work, and now NAV 2003 is working again. i'll have to keep automatic updates OFF until Symantec eventually fixes whatever they broke...

I believe you can delete your current definitions by going to (default) c:\program files\common files\symantec shared.  Just delete the contects of the VirusDefs folder except for the folder 'incoming'.  Then try running the old updater.

I'm having the same problem, running Norton SystemWorks 2002.  After uninstalling/reinstalling several times, I found this forum post (wish I found it sooner).  The latest update(s) make it so I can't scan and bring up the "...a critical error occured during the scan" message.

I found a FTP "archive" of older (and up to date) Definitions.  Are these files legit/safe (Norton Safe Web says the site is safe)?  I'd like to download the 05/10/10 update so my scanner will work.

I hope there is a fix for this problem soon.

I have also just run into the problem today (NAV 2002), on Windows XP SP2. It's at least a bit comforting that it's a compatibiity problem instead of a virus, which is what I was really worried about and had me scrambling all day.

It would be helpful if Norton Antivirus provided a better error message so that users know what to do - after having googled for a while, then reinstalling NAV (just in case), I only just found this thread - probably because it's only now that other people have also run into this problem.

Question - does it have to be NAV 2010, or are there some earlier versions (which I also have) that would work?

BTW - the error also appears to make it impossible to remove NAV using the Control Panel's Remove Program - the program just hangs.

You have to run the original NAV installer and remove it from there

Tmluser, I think I ran into that when I tried to delete the program as well.  I believe Norton was still running in the background.  You have to stop it first, or better yet, shut it off in startup (msconfig), restart, and then go right to delete programs.

One more confirming this error.  2 different PCs in the house are experiencing the same issue.  NIS 2003.  Symantec Personal Firewall.  No windows firewall.  Windows XP SP3.

Also, I agree that finding info on this error was more difficult than I would expect it to be.  Seems like this is affecting many, but the search terms I started with are not bringing this discussion up at all.  It took me some time wording a query to find this forum.

For those who are unable to run scan, refer to the instructions from the following Symantec Article:

Yogesh, I don’t believe that article applies. This problem is caused by a bad set of definitions.

@ quietleaf....

thank you for the work around.. Works perfectly and at least it is up to date to 05/10/10. Ya gotta be fast though. After installing the older defs, at next boot, liveupdate wants to run.

can't get to options to turn off live update till good defs are installed so the program doesn't freeze at the status page.

I would recommend to anyone using this work around to disable your network connection at next boot till you can turn off automatic updates.

Hi,

I am experiencing a similar problem with NIS / NAV 2003 Professional.

As of a couple of days ago, whenever I turn on my PC, NAV Auto protect is disabled.

I then get a Microsoft error message indicating that there is a problem with Auto Protect

and a request to send abend information on to Microsoft.

I can then manually re-enable Auto rotect.

If I then try to run Full System Scan, I get an Symantec error message saying:

Norton AntiVirus was unable to scan your computer for infections because a critical error

occurred during the scan.

There is a link to click to to go the Knowledge Base. This takes me to a page for downloading and running

the AutoFix Tool.

When I run this I get the following error message:

You must run this tool as an Administrator. Please right click the Internet Explorer shortcut, and then click Run as administrator. If you receive this same message, please log in to an account that has Administrator rights and re-run this action.

However I am logged on as administrator. I also created a new administrator account and re-ran the above

with no success.

Would be interested to hear if anyone else has the same problem and if there is a solution.
