After system restore auto protect and sonar advanced protection cant be turned on PLEASE HELP

I have made a system restore as my laptop have been slow and download speed have dropped significantly after installing bittorent.

I couldnt perform system restore 3 times so I googled it and find out that I had to do it in safe mode. It worked.

BUT now my norton 360 says that my computer is at risk because auto protect and sonar advanced protection is not turned on. So is email protection but that is not that siginficent.

Now i have tried going into settings and changing auto protect and sonar advanced protection to on but when i do it and exit it doesnt seem to work as they are off again.

I also tried get support button in norton 360 but after 30 minutes of loading nothing happens.

How can I make it work again? and btw I have not run out of my protection I still have 348 days lef.

Please help I feel so useless and I am scared that I will get viruses on my new laptop. Please help I dont now what to do.

Have you tried undoing the restore?  If you are lucky that will put everything back right, at which point I would uninstall BitTorrent to see if that corrects your slowdown issue.  Your slow system performance and auto-protect shutdown are a little worrisome, but let’s first try to reverse the changes you made to your system and see if that fixes things.

Bittorent will always slow a system down but that is a different issue.

To fix your N360 errors after the system restore you can follow the directions below:

1) Copy your Norton key for safe keeping just in case you need it. You should not need this but it is better to have the key on hand than to need it and not have ready access to the key. You can find a copy of your currently installed key in My Documents\Symantec\Norton 360_Key.txt.

2) Download the Norton Removal Tool from this link. Norton Removal Tool Choose the N360 v3 link if you are using v3 or the other N360 link if you are not ( your version is available in the Help & Support | About menu) and download the BUdump.exe to your desktop and the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to your desktop. Directions are on the link page.

3) Download the latest version of N360 v3 from this link. Reinstall After Removal Choose the Norton N360 link. On the next page you can download the N360 installation software. Premium is the version with 25GB of online storage; Standard has 2 or 3 GB of online storage.

4) Run the BUdump.exe utility if you have any backups that you have run through N360. If you have not done any backup through N360 then you can skip this part.

5) Disconnect from the Internet until your system needs the connection later in the process.

6) Go to START > N360 > Uninstall and let N360 uninstall itself. It will want to reboot the machine. Let it.

7) During the booting of your system, go to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu is shown. Choose the Safe Mode option (no network or command prompt).

8) In Safe Mode, run the NRT tool. When the tool is finished, click on the Reboot to restart your system.

9) Let Windows boot into normal mode now.

10) Install N360 by double clicking the file you downloaded and saved to your desktop in step 3.

11) When the installation asks for your key or says activating your product, reconnect to the internet then (plug your cable in or turn on the wireless card). [Note: The installation may not ask for your key and activate by using the previous key on the system. Your system will still need to connect to the internet at this point so updated definitions can be downloaded.]

12) Run the Live Update process manually until Live Update reports that there are no more updates to download, N360 is fully up to date.

13) Reboot your system now to insure that any components updated during step 12 are loaded properly.

14) See if your error is fixed now.

Report back here with how this works for you.

Thanks for the replies

So

I used the first link for the norton removal tool but none of the links load which is weird. I made a screenshot but I dont know how to post it on here but basically what it says is that internet explorer cannot display the website and then it give a suggestion what to do. The suggestion was to turn off the firewall as it might be blocking the access so i did that but still it doesnt seem to work.

I also read somewhere to run live upload so i did that but it took ages and i think it downloaded something. But at the end it said that not all the uploads were downloaded and the problem wasnt fixed anyway.

Also the get support button seems to work. First it gave me message that i have 3035,2 error and it gave all the instructions on what to do but as i said the links dont seem to work. Then it came up with other error 3038,100 and it again gave all the instructions but the links dont load again.

Oh yeah btw internet works fine apart from the websites with all the fix tools and removal tools from symantec.

Finally i am wondering if i maybe got a virus but i run scan with norton and windows defender and nothing came up. Also that was the reason i did a system restore but i run norton scan before i did it and nothing came up. But this is really weird because as i said the download speed was RIDICULOUS  i mean really like 2kb/s so it would take an hour to download 5mb song. It was about 150kb/s before i think which is not fast but at least took only like few seconds to download 5 mb file.

When i woke up today what i thought i could maybe do is an earliest system restore that i have but i dont know if that would solve the slow performance and norton problems. Other thing i was thinking of maybe to go back to factory settings but i just noticed that i didnt get a cd with my laptop and it said in a guide to do a recovery dics for myself which unfortunately i didnt do. So i was wondering if i could somehow do it anyway as i dont have any important files on my laptop.

Please give some suggestions on what to do.

Andrzej

PS. Sorry for my bad grammar and all. Im Polish but i study in England.

thanks

Oh yeah i also thought of manually uninstalling norton 360 of my laptop and then reinstalling it but that would require the product key again which i think i can only use once more so i wont to be sure that it would work before i do it.

And on bittorrent. I have been using bitcomet before and everything was fine for long time but on saturday it didnt want to download staff so i tried to use it on sunday and same thing happend. So i downloaded bittorrent and then utorrent as it says on many forums that they are the best torrent clients. Anyway they both didnt work which is weird. So now i am wondering if didnt get a virus or something from the torrent clients. Thats just my speculation.

ALSO i just tried to do a quick scan using norton 360 but it was aborted not by me. I looked into security history and it said:

" The virus definition required by Norton 360 are not valid. You cannot run a scan until this problem is solved."

And the weirdest thing is that the live update seem to be working as it just said updated 35 seconds ago. Its getting weird.

Also it says 4 items need your attention and gives you an option fix now, this doesnt work. But when i went in settings it says auto protect is on but its highlighted red and when i went into settings its off. Sonar advanced protection is still off and so is outbound and inbound mail scanning. Btw i tried to change all of those things on but it doesnt work as i said before.

I think thats all. Sorry for repeating myself if I did.

Hi Andgac16,

Did you try the steps from the knowledge Base. Try clicking on this link and let us know the progress. You said that you were unable to download any of the tools from the Norton web-site. Donno if you will be able to download the fix tool but it is well worth a try before proceeding with the uninstall and reinstall.

P.S.  Uninstalling and Reinstalling Norton will not use up the number of licence since it is the same computer.

andgac16 -

The System Restore will not fix network speed issues.  These are usually in the network interface drivers or the actual Internet Service Provider (ISP) is not working properly.  The system restore and Windows rebuild has corrupted N360 and your Windows OS is most likely not right either.

Since you are having internet access issues then do this instead:

First, make sure you have your N360 product key written down so you can get to it.

Second, disconnect from the internet and manually uninstall N360.  As N360user noted, if you reinstall on the machine this still counts as the same use of the subscription count so you will not lose the one remaining.

Third, now that N360 is off the system, do a System Repair installation of windows again.

Forth, check that the installation of windows is OK by running Iexplorer (Internet Explorer) just to see if this open properly.  You will get an error since you are still disconnected from the Internet but that is OK.  Reboot the machine.

Fifth, install N360 from whatever file you have to manually install from.  The installation should find your previous key on this machine and activate.  Check that the errors you had previously are not still happening at this point.  Reconnect to the internet and then reboot the machine.

Sixth, after rebooting, now check that N360 says it is running OK.  Check that Auto Protect is ON, SONAR is ON and the email scanning is enabled.  See if you can manually run LIve Update and that it finishes with out an errors.

Report your progress back here.

how do i do system repair installation of windows? btw i have vista basic and im really dont know much about computers

OK; replace that part of the instructions and do this instead.

Click on START and in the Start Search bar type in cmd .

Right click on the cmd.exe listed at the top there and choose Run as administrator...

In the command window that opens (after the User Access Control pop up is accepted) type sfc /scannow and press ENTER.

When this is finished (it may ask for the installation disk for windows) then reboot your system and continue with the other steps.

(What this does is scan and fix / replace the critical system files should they become corrupted. )

Firstly, thank you all for the replies they have been useful. I have contacted symantec and what they did is used removal tool to uninstall and then they reinstalled it.

I couldnt do it on my own because as i mentioned before the links to that removal tool didnt work, they also didnt work for one of the technitians so they got it on my laptop somehow.

Now everything seems to be working fine.

Now i am sorry that this is off topic but the performance of my laptop has dropped quite siginificantly over few days and so did download speed. I scaned my laptop for viruses and all and everything seems fine. Im going to contact the provider of my internet which plus.net about the speed of downloads and see if this is my or their fault. I mean its really bad it used to be around 150kb/s and took about 6 seconds to download 5 mb file now its at 5kb/s and it takes God knows how long.

Going back to dbrisendine reply. I dont have any disks with windows as they didnt come with a laptop. In my manual it says to make a recovery disk at the begining but i only read it now, after about 1 month of use.

Ok so if anyone has any ideas what should i do about the performance of my laptop please reply but i dont think this is a right place for this so i was thinking that i could make a new post or if anyone has already wrote something about in the forums. Could you send me a link to it.

Thank you everyone.

You can make the recovery disks at any time unless you reformat the entire hard drive so you need to do that to have on hand.  As to the download speed, that is external to your PC system, so you are on the right track in contacting the ISP.  Good luck.
