Alerts: "Email In", & "Email Out" Then, autoprotect shut off by itself

Hello friendly neighborhood tech support people.

I recently bought and installed Norton Internet Security 2009 on my computer after another computer on my home network became infected with:

TDSServ Rootkit

Spyware Guard 2008

MS Antispyware 2009

winscenter.exe

trojan.Vundo

trojan.Agent

and perhaps more... (that problem is ongoing and not really the point of this thread).

The computer with Norton Internet Security 2009 is supposed to be clean, secure, etc.  But when I started it up recently NIS showed two alerts, "Email In" and under that, "Email Out".  My heart sank as I was reminded of the sick rooted computer that was until recently on the same network...  "Could this supposedly secure computer be infected with some backdoor that was just now accessed?", I wondered.  I clicked Fix Now, but to no avail.  Moments later the antivirus autoprotection turned off on its own (or crashed?).  Now under "Email In" and "Email Out" was listed something like, "Autoprotection turned off".  I ripped out the wireless network card, ran Gmer that I had downloaded for the infected computer... it crashed, but heck, I wouldn't understand Gmer anyway... I rebooted into safe mode and ran norton antivirus...

I'm on a different network now...  I'm just wondering if someone can help me make sense out of this.  I wasn't running any email software, as I use web based mail like yahoo.  So what did "Email In" and "Email Out" mean?  Why couldn't I fix them with the "Fix Now" button?  Why did my Autoprotection shut off moments later?  I'm freaked out after the fiasco of my other computer...

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
