All of my desktop icons disappeared just after a Norton page popped up ,that's why I'm posting here

I don't remember what it was exacly (web page, renewal notice, etc.) I just closed it with the windows red X in the upper right. It closed and then all my icons were gone. I can't get them back.  I see them under C:\users\me\desktop and C:\users\public\desktop but nothing I've tried get's them on the desktop. I followed many tips on the web but none apply exactly. I ran sfw /scannow  it said it couldn't fix all the errors. If I right click and pick send to desktop(shortcut) and any programs nothing shows up. I tried to pcik prior restore points but none of them worked.  My machine functions fine, they just don't show up.

Sorry, I shold have included that stuff.

NIS Version: 18.6.0.29

Vista Home Premium Edition 64 bit Service pack 2 build 6002

I ran the scan in normal mode, I'll try it in safe mode.

I don't remember the message but I know it wasn't a virus alert.

Hello pszwec

Right click on the desktop and mouse over View, make sure Show Desktop Icons is checked.

Hi pszwec , if Turbo's suggestion is no help, you may have to run sfc  /scannow from an elevated command prompt up to three times, rebooting between each one. Type cmd in the search field and right click cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator.

As to turbos suggestion, it was already checked.  I did run sfc /scannow once but I will do it a few more times as you suggest.

Here is a little more info based on an earlier reply.  I ran the full scan in safe mode with no problems found. I did notice that my desktop icons did show up in safe mode. I also noticed that some of the test shortcuts I created were in C:\users\me\desktop. Once I restarted in normal mode they disappeared  from the desktop again.

Thanks. will let you know how the multiple sfc's work.

Can you try running Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and SuperAntiSpyware portable: http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html

Also, if you can't upload the screenshot to the forum, upload it to TinyPic and paste the link here

This is the right solution. I didn't read it carefully. I was right clicking over the taskbar and picking show desktop.

Thanks.
