Allow vs auto

I was looking to smooth out my vpn to work when I discovered some programs are allowed, some are auto under Norton 360.
I looked and lo and begold, there is an article addressing this issue:

Could someone post in plain sight a distinction between these two seemingly synomymous attributes?
