Allowing Cookies and Web Sites

I've looked all over "Help" and "Support" for answers. If they are obvious and I just missed them... I am embarrassed.

1. How do I set Norton Internet Security to allow certain cookies, such as from Accuradio.com to block unwanted musical artists?

2. How to I set Internet Security to allow safe web sites that Internet Security is apparently blocking? I don't want to turn it off for hours while I am using the web site. They are not porn  : )

Thanks much with much humility,

Dinzer

Hi dinzer:

Check in Internet Explorer to see if Smart Screen filter is enabled.  It is capable of completely blocking what it considers to be unsafe.  Keep in mind that it is probably for good reason. Cookie handling is normally handled in the browser security settings.

Hi dinzer,

Norton does not block cookies.  If you have it set to remove tracking cookies that it finds, it will do so - but that is after the fact.  Tracking cookies are placed by third party sites, so Accuradio.com cookies that you pick up at Accuradio.com would not be considered as tracking cookies, and Norton would not do anything about them.  Advertisments that appear on Accuradio might drop third party cookies, though.  I'm not sure that cookies would have anything to do with the musical artists unless you are able to set preferences on the site itself to hear only certain artists.  As delphinium mentioned, the Privacy settings in your browser are the best way to configure cookie handling and will let you allow or block cookies on a per-site basis and block all third party cookies, if you wish.

You should never turn off Norton Internet Security when you are surfing the web (there is a reason they call it Internet Security).  When you say NIS is apparently blocking sites, what do you mean?  What do you see when a site is blocked?  Are you getting a notice from Norton when this happens?

When I had previously researched accuradio.com, it indicated Norton might be the source of the problems. Your messages led me to Internet Explorer. I solved my problems and better understand Norton. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome.  Glad to hear the that everything is fixed.

so as to not start a new unecessary thread-

Is Smart Screen Filter a  a new function found only in  IE8?

I read somewhere on this message board awhile back that smart screen filter should be turned off so as to not interfere with norton antiphishing. ?? Can somebody clarify this?

SmartScreen FIlter is the IE8 version of IE7's Phishing Filter.  Neither should be turned on when using Norton Antiphishing because there are some real-time elements in each that will cause conflicts that can disrupt your browsing.
