When installing the new Norton subscription/product key, there are pieces of an old version (not the currently running one) blocking the installation. I can't uninstall these remanents; they remain on the laptop. Norton Remove and Reinstall only seems to remove the currently running version. I'm worried that these old remnants will still be there. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Are you using the newer Norton Remover app? That will only remove the newer version 24 and newer 360 product. If you have the older version 22 360, you need the older Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool from www.norton.com/nrnr .
