An EASY way to make a Ghost SRD on a USB flashdrive..
Tools needed:
- Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (Works on XP too!)
- USB flashdrive (UFD). 512MB might work but at least 1GB would be better (I used a 2 GB UFD).
Insert your UFD and make sure it has a drive letter and can be seen in WIndows Explorer.
With your Ghost CD in the drive, open ImgBurn and use the option to "Create image from files / folders".
Click the small folder in the middle of the window to browse for a folder.
Pick the drive with the Ghost CD.
Under the options tab, pick UDF 1.02. (Don't worry about boot options, the Win7 tool will take care of that later.)
Now give the ISO a name and destination.
Click the big build button at the bottom. This will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your optical drive.
When complete, you can close ImgBurn.
Open the Windows 7 USB / DVD Download Tool.
Browse for the ISO file you just created.
Click USB device.
Pick your UFD in the pull down menu and click "Begin copying".
You will get a warning about the USB being erased, etc.
When it's done, it will have an error about all of the files not copying. Don't worry, they did. The program was probably looking for a much larger ISO to copy. You can check this by opening the drive in Windows Explorer and check the properties of the contents of the CD and UFD (CTRL+A > right click >properties). They will both have the same size of 434,581,762 bytes and 95 files, 21 folders (for the factory Ghost 15 CD).
You can now delete the ISO and MDS files created by ImgBurn.
You now have a bootable UFD without ever opening a command prompt!
The key to making this work is the ISO must be a UDF file system.
This probably will not work with a downloaded Ghost ISO file. If you want to use a downloaded Ghost ISO, you will have to extract the files to a folder on your hard drive first using something like 7-Zip.
PS. Hey Symantec, how about adding the bootable UFD option to the Custom SRD Wizard !
