An unknown service (port 2968) is starting on your mac

I recently installed an Epson XP-342 WiFi printer and I am pretty sure this is linked to the message I am now receiving when I startup/restart my MacBook Air.

I know this is something to do with the Firewall Connection Blocking but I am unsure what application/s (as it is a printer/copier/scanner) to add to the Applications list to stop the message appearing and also whether it has to be added to both Incoming and Outgoing?

Help!

P.S. Am I right to assume that it is the printer installation that has caused this message?

From your first image, uncheck the Always take this action, and check Allow all connections to this service. Make sure you click on Save to register your choice. Then test your connections to the printer.

If this does not work, try uninstalling the software for your new printer, and remove the device from the computer. Restart the computer and see if you are back to being able to access the other printers you say you used to be able to access.

If things are working again without the Norton Message, it would be safe to say it is the new printer software generating the alert. Reinstall the printer and software, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Hi, Paula,

I read your comment and the 2nd img: personally, you would face the said/smilar alert from your Norton Security for Mac again when trying to run one of the Epson Software like Easy Photo Print (for Mac) on your MacBook Air.

Then you may try this: run the said Easy Photo Print (just double-click on that app) > see & read what your NS for Mac will say about your attempt. If you meet that/similar alert from NS for Mac, you're OK to let that app/service/component to modify current rules in firewall.

Hi, I've attached a screen shot for you. Apologies if I am being stupid but my Mac is working fine if I don't select an option on the message (as per screen shot above) but obviously doesn't work as it should when I do select 'Allow all connections to this service'.

I'm not sure what to do you next?

Okay, Paula.

I think your Norton Security was wanting your permission to allow Epson XP-342 to run/install. Could you please provide us with extra info like the complete path of the app?

20161111043406.pngTo find out that app, you may try these steps: hit yr desktop > enter the Go folder > head to Applications > press yr E key on your keyboard > locate the said Epson or Epson-related app there.

20161111044030.pngIf so, you should allow NS for Mac to make proper changes to its Firewall/ Mac's own firewall.

For more help, plz chat w/ Norton Support here.

This is the message I'm getting:

Is it a message similar to this? I know you will have different details, but I am trying to see if it is this kind of Firewall Message. This is on a Windows system, so not sure if you would see similar alerts on a Mac.

windows store firewall message.JPGIf it is this message, have you tried to allow access beside the Options? You can allow it once to see if it allows access to your printer(s).

Hi, I am so sorry but it is not the Mac OS at all as it has appeared again after a re-start. It is Norton Security window. It is really causing me problems with my Mac not running efficiently at all including my connection to the internet and not being able to print to other wireless printers at my external clients (which I have had no problems with previously). I have purposely kept the window open (even though I can't hide it which is very awkward) to see if that would make a difference and it has so it looks like it is something to do with the firewall settings?

Hi, I'm not sure if I am answering the latest query but the it is the Mac OS that is presenting the alert.

Sorry, I am not sure what you are referencing? I asked the OP if there were any messages, and where they came from. I also asked the thread be moved to Mac board.

The message may or may not be related to the new printer, but without more information about the error messages, we cannot determine if it is Norton or the Mac OS presenting the alert.

Is anything being blocked from functioning? Is it a Norton message or a Mac OS message?

I have asked this thread be moved to the Mac forum board where Mac users will see it.
