Android app malware

Hello all. Norton Mobile Security has flagged up my Call Recorder app as having Malware and recommending it is uninstalled. However Malwarebytes can find nothing and I know from previous experience that Norton can sometimes find false positives. I've used this app for a number of years and never seen this problem before. Can anyone help?

@peterweb.

Thanks for all your help with this. The old data is still in the device storage so I'm not sure if that was to blame or not for the detection. I've already emailed the developers for help but if I don't get a reply I will have to find an audio player for AMR files as there's not one currently on my phone.

As Phil S found reinstalling the app stopped the detection, I would suggest you do the same. Uninstall, restart the phone, and reinstall and test.

Phil S:

That doesn't work unfortunately.

I finally bit the bullet and uninstalled the call recorder and no surprise the malware disappeared. I then reinstalled the call recorder and a further scan showed no problems. When I opened the call recorder however, some of the calls were missing. I tried pointing it towards the file back up but no improvement. In the app settings I then cleared the data and everything disappeared. So even though I have the old data and the call recorder is pointed towards that I can't see any of the calls.

You will need to contact the developer of the call recorder app to resolve issues with not being able to see the app data you backed up.

As you see no detections since the reinstall, it may somehow have been something in the stored data that was being detected.

Keep monitoring as you use the app, and post back if you get another detection.

To both

If you wish to try trusting the app, see what happens when you click on the icon in the detection area. Although it says Uninstall, it may offer the option to trust the app.

I’ve had an unhelpful reply from Norton which basically says I can trust or uninstall the app.
I’ve also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Norton 360 but the malware is still being detected. That’s no surprise as the version number is the same. I wonder how often a new version is issued?
Nikki - like you I can’t figure out how to trust the app because you can’t click on it like you can on the other apps. Have you tried Malwarebytes?
Peterweb - I’ve now backed up the call recorder data. It looks like my only option now is to uninstall the app, scan to check the malware has gone, then reinstall and scan again.

Please submit a false positive report as noted in my post above.  https://community.norton.com/en/comment/8501579#comment-8501579

I am having a similar problem since Norton 360 updated to v5.4.1.5649

The app FollowMee has been installed (from Google Play) on my phone for several years without problem.  Only after updating to the latest version of Norton 360 has it started to be flagged as Malware.

I looked for a way to ignore the detection of this app, but could not find that option anywhere.

Any suggestions how to stop this false positive detection?

"Have you been using both Norton Mobile and the Call Recorder apps before with no issue?

Have you been able to send the false positive report to Norton?"

Yes to both. Norton also picks up the Malware on a scheduled scan.

I see you figured out the image posting. I keep forgetting to add the extra steps involved from a mobile device.

Looking at that  image, it shows Malware Detected - "Scanning apps in real time". So your suggestion about the ads at the bottom of the page might fit what you are seeing. And as I do not have an Android phone I cannot test to see if it is getting detected when you are recording or if it might just be the ads.

Have you been using both Norton Mobile and the Call Recorder apps before with no issue?

Have you been able to send the false positive report to Norton?

I can’t seem to do this on my mobile so will try later on my PC.

Generally, uninstalling an app will remove all data related to that app. Maybe if it came to it, you could create a backup folder to copy the recordings before a reinstall.

Before we got there, the Norton reinstall would be my recommendation.

Can you post a screenshot of the detection message, so I can try to determine just what feature is flagging it?

Instructions to post screenshots can be found here

I've already tried a manual scan and the result is just the same. I've also considered uninstalling the call recorder app but have lots of important recordings so would prefer not to do this. However I'm wondering whether the recordings would be retained as they are stored in a folder outside the app. Alternatively I could make a copy of this folder then reinstall the recording app. Maybe, however, it would be easier to do as you say and uninstall/reinstall Norton.

From the main 360 screen, pull down to force a manual scan. Is the app still flagged as an issue?

If the app is still flagged, and if you do not have that many saved items you need to keep in the recorder app, you could try reinstalling it.

If you do not want to lose any saved items, the only thing I can suggest is to keep checking for an update to 360.

EDIT

You could also try reinstalling your Norton 360. This would ensure you are getting the latest malware definitions.

I’ve just checked and can’t see any update for the 360 app. It was updated a couple of days ago and the following day the scan found the malware.

Check the Google Play Store for an update to your 360 app.

I have the ads at the bottom of the screen and nothing got flagged on my tablet.

The Norton version is 5.4.1.5649

I just have the main recorder app ver 6.13 with no add ons. Like I said in my last post could it be related to the displayed adverts?

For the version I was looking for the version number of the 360 Android app. Tap on the three bars at the top left, then click on Settings, then About.  I have ver 5.5.0.5653. I am on the beta channel so I may be a version or two above you.

Do you just have the main recorder app, or have you added any of the add ons they offer? I installed the recorder app ver 6.13
