AntiSpam created multi-folders in Outlook 2010 with Office Update SP2

Multiple folders created named: "the file so that changes to the file will be reflected in your item."  in Outlook 2010

This happened after I updated the Office 2010 SP2 recently.

I have to turn off the Norton AntiSpam in order to delete the folder one by one.. But as along as the AntiSpam is on.. it will keep creating the folders.

I have read from somewhere claiming that this is not a bug in Outlook but is caused by the add in Norton Anti-spam..

HopethereisasolutionsomewherecauseIlovetheAntiSpamfeature.

Attach please find the how the folders were created.. it will keep going to and duplicates..

FWIW, The cause is a compatibility problem with the Norton plugin for Outlook2010 that started with the application of the latest Microsoft Service Pack for Office 2010 which Microsoft released a few weeks ago.

The issue has been addressed and corrected by the latest (v21 and higher) Norton products.

You will need to disable the Norton COM add-in:

    Outlook / File Menu / Options / Add-Ins / Manage [COM Add-ins] [  Go...  ]

Uncheck "Norton AntiSpam Outlook Plugin"  [  OK  ]

    Restart Outlook.

Right-click / Delete the unwanted "ghost" folders in each of the additional / archive / PSTs

Right-click / Empty the recycle bin on each of the PSTs.

    Restart Outlook.

The "ghost" folders should no longer be appearing each time you exit/restart Outlook at this point.

Upgrade to the v21 version of your Norton product.

At this point you should be good to go - If the Norton Antispam addin dose not self reactivate after doing the upgrade go back into COM Add-Ins and re-enable it.  Let us know if this corrects your problem - it did for me.

Regards,

John

I followed the precise directions as outlined by avjohnnie on my windows 7 32 bit desktop, running Outlook 2010.

First I deleted the ghost files and cleared out the recycle

After rebooting, I updated to NIS 21

After rebooting, I restarted Outlook, re-activated the Norton Plug-in and have been watching the results for a few hours

1) No more ghost folders

2) Everytime I close Outlook 2010 Norton plug-in continues to deactivate, thus I need to open Options > COM > reactivate the Norton plug-in

Did I miss something?

Any ideas?

By the way, what about other add-in COMs that have been effected by the Office 2010 Service Pack? I cannot keep Evernote add-in, itunes add-in, etc running as well as the Norton plug-in

Thanks!

This is beginning to sound like a possible registry corruption issue...

To indentify whether it's a System-level or a User-level corruption, consider creating a new user account on your computer.

Then try using Outlook from within the new user account.

If the deactivation issue persists then there's something broken at the System-level and you should seek a tech's assistance.

If it works, consider copying your user data (Docs, etc.) to the new account and running on it for a while.

Note: Avoid using the Windows Easy Transfer tool to do the copy process as it can also duplicate the breakage.

Lastly - and don't be in a hurry to do this final step...

If after a month or two you find that everything is still working as expected, you can consider removing the broken user account.

Kind Regards,

John

I too was having the same problem and followed your advice to the letter. It worked until I turned the Anti spam back on after installing the Nortons update and I am now back to where I was. The folders are reproducing again. Thanks for taking the time to post here, if you have another suggstions as to what to try next I'd really appreciate it.

Dear John,

( I never thought I would ever write a dear John letter )

Please clarify what you are suggesting that I try to see if this is a regissystem level or user level problem.

You suggested that I sign in and consider creating a new user account on your computer.

Then try using Outlook from within the new user account.

Is that a new Outlook user account or when I start up the computer, to start up under a different users name?

I am not savvy enough to know how to create a new user account for either, maybe you could please point me in the right direction.

Currently, where I am at is that I get no ghost folders at all and if I remember, and go to the COM add-ins and activate NIS plug-in before I receive a batch of emails, the program does work; just that extra step each time in starting Norton.

Remembering back to DOS days, I wonder if there is a batch command that would turn on Norton each time I open Outlook?

Thank you

Steven drb123

Hi Steven,

Please understand that in no way do I mean this in any negative manner; but your request for clarification indicates to me that you would be best served by seeking the assistance of a qualified technician who is fully versed in the various aspects of the Windows operating environment.

Without going into too great of detail, what I was referring to in my previous post involves using the Windows control panel to create a new Windows user account (preferably with elevated privileges) then using that new account to test out whether or not a new (otherwise clean) user instance utilizing the current Outlook installation works to solve the Norton plugin issues being experienced.

Kindest Regards,

John

With anti spam off, problem solved. Even with version 21...., when I turn N anti spam back on, problem returns, So I just leave it off, no more time to mess with this. Question to Norton: Why do you let this happen??

My problem is I had the Norton plug in disabled. Now after the update its enabled (not by me?) but though its said to run at start up its not?

Same problem here:

NIS version installed is 21.0.1.3

Outlook version installed is 14.0.7106.5001 (32 bits), aka Office Pro 2010 SP2

If the NIS antispam plugin is activated, then when opening/closing outlook some folders are created (from 1 to 3, number of folders looks random). The only way not to have "spam" folders created is to de-activate the anti-spam plugin.

Folder name used is always the same "the file so that changes to the file will be reflected in your item"

Thanks for fixing the problem urgently!

Hi neko386:

If you are using NIS 21.x (2014), Symantec is delivering a product update to NIS  v. 21.1.0.18 via LiveUpdate that should correct this problem.   See Tony Weiss' announcement of 10-Sep-2013 about this update here as well as instructions by Symantec employee sneha_renga here  on how to manually delete the ghost folders in your Outlook mailbox after the v. 21.1.0.18 update is delivered.

If you are using NIS v. 20.x (2013), an upgrade to  v. 21.1.0.18 will be required to fix the problem - see sneha_renga's post here.

MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP2 * Firefox 24.0 * IE 9.0 * NIS 2013 v. 20.4.0.40
