Antispam Folders Missing or Hidden After January 12, 2011 Updates

After installing Norton Updates that were posted in the period between 11 PM (GMT-8:00) January 11 and 8 AM January 12, 2011 the Norton Antispam Folder went missing or hidden. Details as follows:

Windows 7 64-bit, NIS 2011 18.5.0.125, Outlook 2010 32-bit.

Windows and Office fully updated through yesterday’s updates although there were no updates for Office 2010 products on yesterday. NIS 2011 fully updated through pulse updates plus on daily startup I do a manual live update of NIS before doing anything else on the computer instead of waiting for pulse updates to kick in.

Antispam folders were present until last night’s shutdown and that includes after at least one reboot after installing the monthly Windows updates. Plural is used because NIS 2011 added Norton Antispam folders to each and every Outlook data folder.

I do understand and am otherwise happy to see that email flagged as Norton Antispam will go to the Outlook Junk Email folder but there is also a silly glitch in that there is a blank line in the Outlook Navigation Panel (email tab) where the Norton Antispam folder should be. The blank line appears to be partial height but that is because corresponding lines are slightly enlarged or higher because of icons. Even more important is that it is not good when NIS updates do not play nice with email clients.

Wasted several hours in chat with troubleshooting but their support system is currently a bit overwhelmed. Even before contacting Norton Support I verified client integration based upon a search. Subsequently uninstalled and reinstalled NIS 2011 with no effect but if the problem is with updates as I suspect then the issue would have been recreated anyway. Also “toggled” client integration (Settings > Network Settings > Client Integration and checking/unchecking appropriate boxes) including a reboot between removing client integration and then re-enabling client integration.

I did confirm the issue because someone else that is using Outlook 2010 and NIS 2011 today had the same problem although with Vista 32-bit. My laptop with Outlook 2007 and Norton 2011 with today’s Norton updates did not have the problem.

Because the support system is a bit overloaded today I dealt with three different techs so also might have had some different experiences with this but beyond client integration and uninstall/reinstall of NIS didn’t get anywhere. Support did become less enthusiastic when they could not remotely access my computer to see for themselves but I have remote access blocked in a couple of settings and will not re-enable.

So if anyone has any thoughts about what is wrong, I would greatly appreciate those. Otherwise, I or we can only wait until there are enough reports that a future update fixes this.
