hi!

This is good feedback--thanks for taking the time to write. I just want to make sure I understand what you are doing.

So, when you are decompressing a file, like a .zip file, how are you scanning it?  We have a few options:

1 - you can drag the file to the application if it's open

2 - you can use the contextual menu to scan the file.  The Norton AntiVirus application should not open when you do this option -- it's not opening for you, is it? If it is, there's an issue.

Both options show a progress bar and both options have a button that says "hey, we're done scanning".  It sounds like you don't like that final step, right--like, you would like to scan a file and then have a dialogue box come up only if we find something?

If this is what you want, I totally get it and it looks like a good feature request.  We came about that final "Ok" dialogue after we did a bunch of user testing--the people we talked to wanted some kind of notification that the scan was done and confirmation that we did not find something. Otherwise, they had no idea if they should deal with the contents of the archive, etc.

Our product runs completely behind the scenes for day to day operations. When you are just using your machine, Auto-Protect is scanning files as they are written to disk, informing you of an issue only when we find something.  We also update our product definitions completely behind the scenes--no LiveUpdate window, nothing.  Norton AntiVirus will notify you when:

- you choose to do a scan, a manual scan or a scheduled scan. We figured that if you started an action, you would want to be told when the action was done.

- when you have the Auto-Disk scan turned on and you choose to show progress for that scan. Obviously, you can turn this off in the preferences.

When you say you are decompressing a file, you are just double clicking on the archive, right? If you have Auto-Protect turned on, you do not need to manually scan the archive or the resulting decompressed files, Auto-Protect scans the decompressing files as they are written to do disk--without scanning progress or an "We're done" box.

My personal focus was to make sure we work as behind the scenes as possible for "automatic" activities, like the ongoing scans that Auto-Protect does and for updating the product and product definitions--so if we have a chance to make things better, we'll definitely do it. If I understand your situation correctly, it sounds like you do not need to be doing that scan in the first place if you have Auto-Protect turned on.

thanks! let me know if I've to got this right.

HI Mike,

You've got it exactly. I can see why some folks want the extra dialog, but I'd prefer not to have it, so perhaps making it a selectable option is the way to go.

Re: the way the scan comes up, I double-click the zip file and Stuffit expander launches (I have it set to decompress pretty much every compressed file we receive). Stuffit Expander (12.0.1) has an Expansion preference to "Scan for viruses using: ..." with a pop-up menu to select an application, which I have done and set to "Norton AntiVirus.app". Perhaps that is the problem right there. Either I need to select some other process/app that Norton AntiVirus uses, or turn that option off altogether. I take it that NAV will still scan the expansion automatically, even if Stuffit doesn't expressly call for NAV.

Hi Roy!

Ah...that's the culprit! Turn off that thing from Stuffit--it is totally unneccessary if you have Auto-Protect turned on. We'll scan it for you without launching the application.

Thanks for the feedback on the extra dialogue--I bet I can do something like this:

1 - scan happens

2 - we show "Scan is done" - and then, next to the "OK" button, say "Do not show unless we find something" with a check box next to it.

That way, you'll get that intitial information, but get the option to not show it in the future.

Great--thanks a lot for posting and giving us a chance to work wtih you on this..please let me know if I can do anything else to help!

All the best,

mike
