I'm not sure when this problem started happening ( I think my wife says it started a few months ago), but here are current symptoms. I can run a custom scan and select the C drive and the scan runs successfully. However, if I select the quick scan it gets stuck initializing and never scans any files. If I run a full scan it will run through 4000+- files, but eventually get stuck and stops processing any more files. It doesn't always get stuck on the same file.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the problem persists. I attempted both types of uninstalls, plan to reinstall later and the one to remove everything.
Initially when I was running the custom scan that would hang as well, but by scanning one directory at a time I was able to narrow the problem down to a single subdirectory. The directory was something like c:\Document and Settings\Admins\localSettings\temp\..... Since it was in a temp directory I deleted all of the files in that directory. After doing that I was finally able to run a complete custom scan of the C drive with out it hanging, but left with the current problem.
This is windows XP. I made sure I had Microsoft and Norton updates - the problem remains.

I tried some of the things suggested, but I think there was more wrong with this PC than just Norton. Ended up reinstalling the OS, thanks for the help though.
