Many thanks Mel. I assumed even though it's 4 years old because I've been re-subscribing each year that it was up-to-date.
Someone has recommended that I use AVG anti-virus instead which he says is far superior to Norton and free. Personally I've never heard of it.
I just hope that by uninstalling all of Norton I sort out my Flash problem as well.
Hi, I wonder if someone could help me please? Yesterday I tried uninstalling Quicktime 7.2 (to install a later version) which would not uninstall properly, either through Add/Remove programs or the uninstall utility. So I just deleted the folder and all the files. In hindsight this wasn't a smart thing to do.
Ever since then my Norton products (Anti-Virus and Internet security 2004) will not load up in the task bar. When clicking on the icons in the start menu, nothing happens. The hour-glass will appear for about a second and then go back to a normal pointer. The program simply will not load.
Even right-clicking on a file and trying "scan with Norton anti-virus" doesn't do anything. Rebooting the machine does not help either.
Apart from FlashMX, the rest of my programs seem to work fine (Flash also does the same as Norton in that it won't load up when double-clicking the icon).
I am completely stuck so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have WindowsXP Home Edition with SP2 on my machine.
Thanks,
Adrian.
hey agb - i think (and hope) that they make technological improvements to the products as time goes by... like to hear from SYMC on that point, as elsewise i'd think i was being naive :)

Howdy,
As MelodicWynd suggests, there are major differences across the versions of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security from year to year. A couple examples from this past year is that we added the new Identity Safe and Home Networking features, amongst a large number of "under the hood" changes you'll likely never see but are important nonetheless. An example of some of the under the hood changes include our new browser protection feature (blocks exploiting websites) and expanded "behavioral" antivirus we introduced in 2008. Behavioral AV doesn't use signatures, but rather detects threats based on how they behave on the system.
Just for a little more perspective on how much work goes into each new release (and in between releases), we updated or released new engines 80+ times last year! The challenging thing is that many of these updates are very technical in nature and hard to describe and we want to give you the best experience possible so we work hard to make them very silent.
So while your NIS 2004 was certainly better than not having any protection at all, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and you'd do a lot better with NIS08.
Dave
hi Adrian - i'm not sure what dependency was broken by the deletion of the qt files and folders, but i would not recommend working very hard to get nis04 back on your system. "four year old security software" is likely not proficient at successfully defending against threats that have propogated since its release. that said, if you must, i'd recommend using symnrt to nuke the remenants of 04 (after using add/remove), then try reinstalling... if that fails, take it for a blessing and buy/install 08.
good luck,
mel
