It's a family computer. We have the whole Norton Security Suite thing. We're pretty sure we've got a virus but we have no idea which one. I don't know if I'll find help here, but maybe.
So, everytime we run antivirus, it gets stuck just after it starts. At first it would scan for a few second until it reached around file number 4200, then the loading activity circle would keep spinning, but it would never get any further. If I tried to pause or skip, the same problem, the circle thing spins, nothing happens. Eventually I'd just close it and try to start again and when I do the scan again, it just says that a scan is already in progress and gives a link to the Power Eraser. Restarting the computer lets the scan run again, but it just gets stuck early on still. the first couple times it would move ahead about 100 files before getting stuck again. It got as far as about 5200 a couple days ago. But was back to the 4000s this morning. the file it says that it's on is different each time, so it doesn't seem to be just one specific file. Since I can't complete the scan it cant find the virus, and it seems to have shut off all the automatic background scans. the last time it was able to scan was 8/2/2012, and that was an idle time scan that only lasted 2 minutes. We've tried Malwarebytes and that found nothing. the updates and all other scans function normally, it's just antivirus.I also noticed this morning that the virus definitions stopped updating.
The other little effects to the computer that seem to be happening are that the quicklinks on the taskbar disappeared. I put them back but they no longer function, then they disappeared when the compouter was restarted. Double clicking some of the desktop shortcuts also does nothing. I have to right click and select Open. I also have to right click files in my recent documents and program list from the start menu.
Since it's been having problems for around 10 days I guess I'm pretty late getting here, and I don't know what can be done, but I made this account just to ask on here about this and see if I find anything.
Moved to own thread for better exposure.
