Will it be able to protect the phone from hacking?

Only you can decide if you feel you are savvy enough to avoid all the pitfalls of the internet.
Personally I would not connect without protection.
I use it to search for information on Google, I don't know how dangerous it is, but I try to go only to the official websites of companies and read news on well-known sites.
I also use social networks and e-mail. But I don't follow links sent by people I don't know.
Depending on how you use your phone, you may be able to get away without antivirus. But if you are going to be actually using the smartphone to its potential, ie using the internet, it is worth the peace of mind of having that antivirus helping to protect you.
As for protection against hacking, Norton will protect from automated attempts from any websites or emails you get. Just be sure you follow safe internet practices. Do not click on links in emails, and be careful with what web sites you visit.
