Antivirus Outlook Protection can not be loaded

I just purchased Norton 360.  When I brought up my Outlook the Norton software seemed to stall.  I escaped and closed Outlook.  When I reopened I got a message.

The Add-in "Symantec Antivirus Outlook Protection" (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\vpmsece.dll) cannot beloaded and has been disabled by Outlook.  Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an update.  If no update is available, please install the Add-in.

I have no idea where to start.  Any help would be appreciated.

Can ask you please to tell us the exact version of your Norton product as well?
1. Open the main window

3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 5.1.0.29)

Thanks!

5.1.0.29

What was your previous security solution before Norton 360 v5?

Hi Maskil,

The file you have mentioned in the error message(vpmsece.dll) belongs to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition or Symantec Endpoint Protection. I think, you had one of those programs before you installed Norton 360. So, uninstalling and reinstalling Norton 360 won't be able to resolve this. First, try to disable the plug-in from Outlook:

    1. Open Outlook
    2. Click Tools -> Options
    3. Select the Other tab
    4. Click the Advanced Options button
    5. Click the Add-in Manager button
    6. Unselect the Symantec AntiVirus Outlook Protection

Restart the computer, and if the problem persists, you can try the solution mentioned in the following article:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH99902

Let us know which one worked for you.

Thanks.  I followed you instructions.  They seemed much simpler.  But I could not find an "Add-in Manager" button.  I will take a look at the link you gave me.

Sorry, it should be in Tools > Trust Center > Add-ins.

There is no Antivirus Outlook Protection to uncheck.  There is antispam.  That is it.

This did not work.  Still get the error.  A virus has attacked me in the meantime.

Run a scan using the Norton power Eraser tool, that will detect and remove the virus if your computer is infected. You can find the instructions in the following Support Article:

Norton Power Eraser

After you run the scan and remove the virus (if any), uninstall and reinstall the Norton product. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall the Norton product.

Norton Removal Tool

After you run the Removal Tool and restart the computer, you get a Web page with the instructions to download and install your Norton product. Download and install it. I hope that will take care of the Outlook problem.

1. Close Outlook.

2. Navigate to the following folder:

Documents and Settings\<local user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
3. Delete extend.dat

4. Restart the computer and check.

Turns out that a virus did not attack me, it attacked the server and sent a message using my email address and my mail list.  I am okay.  But I still have the notice every time I bring up Outlook.

maskil,

Did you try deleting the extend.dat file as I suggested in my previous post?
