Is there any point to turning "Email Protection" on when I use only webmail -- Gmail?

Hi virusgirai,
If you turn off email scanning you may get a "Fix Now" alert from Norton. To turn off the alert, go to the main Norton window. In NIS 2010 hover your mouse cursor over the small letter "i" next to Email Protection (in NIS 2011 and NIS 2012, hover the cursor directly over the words "Email Protection"). In the pop up that appears, click "Ignore." This tells Norton not to monitor the "On/Off" state of email scanning and stops it from alerting you when the component is disabled.

My thanks for the 2 excellent replies.
NIS 2010 was a typo. I have NIS 2012.
