I did search forums and didn't find anything that matched this particularly.
I will start off by apologizing for the lack of potentially critical information, I am trying to help my in-laws over the telephone...
To get right to it, my in laws tried signing into AOL, not the server, just their accounts through IE8 for email.
Evidently, it was giving the "web page not available" error or something of the sort, not a pop up error window though. It is simply not letting them sign in. All of this just started a few weeks ago.
They use Norton. They have used Norton for years, as have I. There has been no software or hardware changes recently.
They called AOL, who explained it was a Facebook virus....
Personally, I am curious to know how they figured this out within 1 minute of a telephone call. If it is that widely known of a virus they could diagnose that quickly with no system or really any type of info AT ALL, there would be info everywhere online. I have looked and looked and found nothing. They did offer to fix the problem for $199.00 though lol. Good ol AOL.
They also spoke with Century Link. Now I really have no idea what they told them because the only thing I got verbatim from that conversation was "something with our URL or something."
Other symptoms include a VERY slow startup to desktop and of course, clean bill of health from Lavasoft Adaware, Spy-Bot and Norton.
Something is definitely wrong with their pc. I built it and it is not quite 2 years old. Its a real screamin' rig when it works.
Lastly, as painful as it is to say, when I built it, they insisted that I reinstall Win XP.
This may actually get them to go to 7.
Any other info that I have, which is limited, I will be more than happy to share. I will keep a close eye on this post.
If any of you wizards out there have heard anything about this and have any idea where I can point them to or give me a starting point...well, just remember its my in-laws, so it will be priceless info.
Thank you in advance, Shawn O.
