When you turn on the Apply updates only on reboot option, the Restart Now and the Restart Later options appear in the Norton LiveUpdate window. When you click Restart Now, your computer is restarted and the program updates are applied. When you click Restart Later, the program updates are applied when you restart your computer.
When you turn off the Apply updates only on reboot option, the Apply Now option appears in the Norton LiveUpdate window. When you click Apply Now, the program updates that do not require system restart are applied instantly. However, the program updates that require system restart are automatically applied the next time you restart your computer.
Does that mean with it turned off (default), Norton won't remind you an reboot is required after installing a product update but if you turn it on, it will notify you that a reboot is required? In other words, Norton "waits" for you to reboot to "apply" the patch but does not tell you a reboot is needed?
The help text is a little confusing since Norton 2013 is touted to not require a restart.
The goal is to reduce the number of patches that need restarts in order to install. This capability is only available in Windows 7 and WIndows 8. For patches that can be applied without a restart, clicking "Apply" will provide the user with instructions about closing certain open programs, after which the patch will be installed instantly. Some patches, however, may still require a restart and it is my understanding that LiveUpdate will alert the user in those cases, just as it does now.. It's new - we'll see.
Hmmm... if that's the case why can't they just "skip" the "apply" stage and just apply the fix and only alert if something is needed to be done.
The help file makes it seem that it would install as much as possible and install the rest upon user restart. It won't tell the user a restart is needed. It merely "waits" for the user to restart.
Can somebody at Symantec please explain this behavior on whether Norton WILL notify you if an update is requiring a restart or will it simply "wait" for you to restart?
