I agree with those who do not think this is appropriate. Can't belie4ve Symantec would add a third party toolbar to a pay for program. Symantec, you will loose business over this. The fact that it can be disabled is immaterial!
Please stop this and provide a way to completely remove this item, ASAP.;
I have been using Norton for like twenty years, and will seriously consider switching when my current subscription is up.
I’d like to clarify that the search box you see is a new security feature of the Norton Toolbar called Safe Search—not a third party application or toolbar. Please rest assured that no third-party toolbar was installed on your PC by Norton Internet Security 2009.
Safe Search is included as part of Norton Safe Web, a new Web site rating feature we have introduced in Norton 360v3 and integrated into Norton Internet Security 2009. Safe Web annotates Google, Yahoo and Live.com search results with site safety ratings to warn users about sites that may pose a danger to them. It also includes eCommerce safety ratings to help users make safer online shopping decisions.
Symantec partnered with Ask.com on Safe Search to offer users a safer search experience. In addition to embedding Norton Safe Web’s site safety ratings directly into the search results, it automatically filters out dangerous sites by default. Users have the option of changing the default settings to view the unfiltered results but will be warned before visiting sites that can infect their PCs. You can find more information about Safe Search here: http://norton.com/safesearch and more about the Norton Toolbar here: http://www.symantec.com/norton/products/toolbar/popup.jsp?pvid=nis2009_ss.
I don’t have this update yet, please tell me what it changes in relation to the anti-phishing toolbar. I get the impression that there is an ask.com search built into it. I am not at all interested in searching with ask.com, so can this part be disabled, is it seperate from the security toolbar? It would be VERY irritating if an ask.com search bar was integrated into the norton security toolbar in such a way that it was a “both or neither” choice.
I Totally agree Symantec SHOULD NOT be adding the ASK Tool Bar I reccommend to all my customers that the ask toolbar be removed along with all other toolbars Google Yahoo Microsoft ETC
I don’t know why you guys are getting all excited about this, it’s easily turned off and disabled by clicking one simple button in the “Norton” drop down list in the tool. Uncheck “Show search box”, done. No more search window.
Symantec is partenring with ask.com on this one. Symantec will use the intelligence. Same way as Symantec is partenring with PCTools. Symantec is just getting the best out of these programs and integrates it into their products. It will just improve the product.
Something needs to be made clear, the toolbar is a NORTON TOOLBAR. there is NO Ask.com TOOLBAR. it is simply a function built into the NORTON toolbar that makes use of ask.com's search engine because Symantec does nothave their own!! It is an added security function that Symantec has added for customers who appreciate things like that. It can be REMOVED from the tollbar by right clicking and selecting the do not show function relating to the ask.com function.
I believe that people should STOP complainging as this function DOES NOT have to be used. Symantec has made a huge effort to rectify its wrongs. One has to realise that many people would like the use of that function (even though I would not) and that for those who don'e, it CAN BE SWITCHED OFF. So please stop complaining. You still have excellent security, and a new function that helps those people who cannot tell good websites from bad websites avoid malicious drive-by downloads.
The main problem is that the new safe web additions add the ASK search bar--Yes it can be turned of-Thank God--, but this should never have been tied to a specific search provider. It adds additional resources and code that are not needed. I will turn the search bar off, but then I loose some of the filtering. Symantec should redo this so it filters on any search provider without a specific search bar like ASK
Another reason: Symantec is starting what appears to be internal advertisements in their software…the Ask toolbar.

That is NOT TRUE. You still have the same functionality in Google and others. Honestly, this is getting blown way out of proportion. You can turn it off and NOT LOSE ANY FUNCTIONALITY WHATSOEVER!
I see there is a new thread now, a petition of sorts to have it removed. I don't see the reasoning behind it, since it is effortless to disable it completely.
According to a post by Symantec employee: “In addition to embedding Norton Safe Web’s site safety ratings directly into the search results, it automatically filters out dangerous sites by default.” I don’t see how this would happen if I, for example, open a new google search page" ???
I was referring to the safe search enviroment developed with Ask.com. When using Safe Search, you'd notice that by default unsafe (red) search results are filtered out. However, if users would like to view all search results, they can easily include all results right from the search results page. This is the kind of features that we can develop by having our own search environment.
Thanks,

I still dont have the 16.5 version of NIS (when will i have it ? ) so i dont have the askbar thingy but i know that if you are using firefox and use the WOT extension , it does the same as safe search
As far as I know, I was never asked whether I want the Ask search in my norton IE 7 toolbar. I use Google as my search engine, and I definitely don't want the Ask toolbar as part of my Norton toolbar. It's outrageous that Symantec would install Ask w/o my permission. Symantec's disregard for my privacy makes me think twice about whether to ever again use Norton products. One big Yikes to Norton for this unwarranted invasion.
I give up trying to explain this. The density in here is thicker than mercury. If you people don’t realize you can turn it off with a simple click and just continue to babble about how Symantec has aborted your first born, there’s no hope.
The fact that you can turn it off is not the point. It is tying the filtering to ASK, and installing this without our permission, not to mention this is a form of advertising in a paid for product–There are other issues as well–read all the posts.
When you go to Google, or Yahoo, you still get the green check mark/red mark for sites right? That is the same functionality, the only thing the ask.com one does is filter out the red marked ones.
I think we're all capable of making the right choices after looking at the safe/unsafe lists, and don't need Symantec to hold our hands when clicking on a link.
