Auto Fix Failed After Product Update

This problem has bothered me for a long time.

Every time after I received the product update through Live Update, i.e. the latest 17. 7. 15, I would run Get Support (Auto Fix). Then the result would show there was an Installation Problem and the status was Failed ( Couldn't repair). And it suggested me to remove and reinstall Norton Internet Security 2012.

I did so, RnR the NIS. Then I ran Auto Fix, also there was an Installation problem but which could be fixed.

I have to RnR my NIS every time there is a new product update, this is so tiring:smileysad:

Is there anyone who can tell me why and help me out?

I'll really appreciate...

Hello lyovse and welcome!

I am sorry to hear of the problem you are having after each inline update.  I am assuming that 17. 7. 15 is a typo and you meant 19. 7. 1.5.

It would be helpful to know a bit more about your computer.

  1. How was the current Norton product installed - from disc or download?  Was it installed "overtop" the previous version?
  2. What security software did you have prior to Norton? Was it completely uninstalled?
  3. Do you have any other security software currently installed?
  4. Did you scanyour system for malware before attempting the installation?
  5. Also, if you can tell us which operating system you are using along with the service pack, that would further help us with diagnosing your issue.

Thanks.

Hi lyvose,

Please try running manual LiveUpdate (rebooting as required) as many times as necessary for it to respond "no more updates available" .

Just curious why you run Get Support after each update - does it supply an error code?

BTW, the latest version of NIS 2012 is 19.7.1.5 and that is what you should have when you complete all the LiveUpdates.

Perhaps uninstaslling, running the norton removal tool and reinstalling in lieu of using the RnR may work better.

Please remember to backup your ID Safe Data prior to running the norton removal tool as a precaution.

Keep us posted.

Hi, Phil_D!

Yes, it was a typo. My version is 19.7.1.5.

Answers to your questions:

1. Downloaded for the very first time, that was 19.5.X.X perhaps...After that, NRnR for several times. Thanks to NRnR, no overtop.

2. ESET NOD32 Smart Security. I think it was completely uninstalled. I checked every possible directory, there is no residual.

3. No security software. I have iolo System Mechanic standard version (not include antivirus feature, just system utilities) installed, but NIS does say it is incompatible.( This issue was reported sometime ago by other people, but the result said that it was a false positive, since only iolo SM pro has av feature which may be conflicting)

4. I scan my computer very often, no threat detected.

5. My OS is Windows 7 SP1.

Thank you very much!

Hello yank and thank you!

In fact, these recent product updates which caused my problem were completed in background without my awareness. I found them when I started my computer the next day. However, after I RnR my NIS, I updated my product to latest version manually. Does that matter? Should I receive every inline update manually? I may not know the update is coming every time.

I run Get Support after each update since the first time I found the problem. I forget the error code, it suggested me to open online support, and the webpage asks me to RnR.

Yes, it is 19.7.1.5. It was a typo. Now I am using the latest one.

If the problem occurs again next time, I'll try Norton Removal tool instead.

Thank you very much!

BTW, my OS is win 7 Professional sp1

I just wanted to clarify what yank suggested.  That is to uninstall NIS through Programs and Features first and then follow that with the NRT. Do not just use the NRT by itself.  If you need detailed instructions, please let us know.

I do not know a great deal about iolo System Mechanic standard version, but since it performs a number of functions including registry cleaning and since NIS warns of incompatibility, that may be the cause of your problem.

Last, I was going to suggest running the Eset Removal tool to be sure there are no remnants of the old program, but after reading the updated information and the almost dire warnings about using the tool, perhaps it is best to not consider that.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you Phil_D,

You mean Program and feature in control panel? The built-in uninstalling function? Is NRT used to remove any remnant after the default uninstallation process?

Forget to mention. Before I installed iolo system mechanic, the problem had already occurred. I think iolo is irrelevant.

Thank you for your patience!

Yes, that is correct. Here are instructions to get a clean uninstall and re-install:

The preferred approach is to run the native uninstaller before using the NRT.

  • Download and Save the Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Download and Save the NIS2012 Installer to your desktop.
  • Or, to eliminate a huge number of updates after installation:
  • Go to this page of the Norton Update Center and after selecting Start Download, chose to Save the Norton Download Manager to your desktop. (The advantage of the download manager is that it pulls in the most recent updates during installation.)
  • For temporary protection, turn on your Windows Firewall.
  • PLEASE Export / Backup you Identity Safe Data to a convenient location.
  • Have your product key handy.
  • Uninstall your current Norton Version via Add-Remove Programs or Programs and Features.
  • If prompted, do not select the option to save your settings.  Select "Please remove all user data...." (see image here)
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
  • After the restart, run the Norton Removal Tool.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
  • Right click on the downloaded NIS Installer or Norton Download Manager and select “Run As Administrator” (XP users just double click).
  • If prompted, enter your product key and set up your Norton account.
  • Check that Norton has turned OFF the Windows Firewall.
  • Run Live Update a few times until no more updates are available. Restarts may be required after some of the updates.

For your convenience, I have attached printable instructions.

Wow! That is very detailed and helpful!!

Thank you very much!!!

I'll try it ASAP. But I can not tell whether it would solve my problem untill the next product update. I'll keep you informed.

Last humble request, I've posted a msg describing another issue, but no one answers yet. ( maybe Norton Toolbar / Norton Identity Safe has fewer visitors) Would you please pay a little attention? Really appreciate. Now I don't know that issue is general or particular case. Thank you. Link is here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Toolbar-Norton-Identity/Norton-Identity-Safe-Toolbar-Problem-in-Chrome/td-p/721202

Thank you!

Are you there? Phil_D?

I have my NIS reinstalled by following your instructions. And I ran Get Support too. The result was that it had successfully fixed an installation problem. And I copied the infomation as below:

Norton Internet Security
19.7.1.5
Error: 0, 0
Windows 7 Professional
7601.17803.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.120330-1504
Norton Autofix Results: 2 item(s)
Conflicting Product - iolo technologies' System Mechanic :: Skipped
Installation :: Success

This result is exactly the same with what I confronted after I used NRnR to reinstall NIS. Now that there is no new product update, I can not be sure whether my problem is fixed or not.

Thank you soooo much!

Yep, I'm here.

If the product is still requiring a fix after the clean installtion and Norton is flagging iolo System Mechanic as a conflicting product, then I think you have narrowed down the issue to iolo System Mechanic.

As previously mentioned, I am not very familiar with this product, nor am I a fan of using automated registry cleaners on a regular basis.

I think it boils down to this.  If you want to keep iolo System Mechanic, then you may have to accept the inconvenience of the NRnR each time there is an inline update.

But since Norton flags this as a conflicting program, that would concern me on a daily basis as to whether it could be affecting Norton's protection features.  I don't know for sure and I don't want to be an alarmist. Just expressing my thoughts.

The one last thing you could try is the Eset Removal tool

Please read all the warnings and disclaimers before deciding to use this tool. It may not even make any difference.

Thank you Phil_D!

Although I said earlier that before I was using iolo System Mechanic, the problem had already been there, I probably misremembered. Probably iolo SM is the cause.( Sigh). I bought iolo SM just half a month ago.

BTW, did you notice the 13th msg of this thread in which I had the other question that need your kind help.

Thank you alwasys!

Sorry.......11th msg of this thread...

I can't bear my typos anymore.

Hey lyovse,

Yes I did read the other message you referred to, but since I only use Chrome occasionally, I don't have an answer for you on that one.

If I think of anything, I will post over there.
