Auto Live Update With Windows Vista in Sleep Mode

I've  noticed that when I put my computer to sleep or set it to go to sleep after so much inactivity the Automatic Live Update doesn't continue until I wake  up the computer and the graph on Norton shows the computer has  been asleep. This happens just on the computer with Windows Vista. The computer with XP continues to do Automatic Live Update even when the computer has been put  to sleep. Also the Norton graph on the computer with Windows XP never shows the computer has been asleep. I did read that  the sleep in Windows Vista is different than sleep in previous versions. Should I never put my computer with Vista  to sleep or will it be safe without getting automatic updates? Also what about using screensaver--will that also prevent Automatic Live Updates?  I like to use the sleep feature after so many minutes of inactivity, but don't want to lose Norton protection.

Hi Holly,

Auto LiveUpdate cannot run when your computer is truly asleep. This is because the disk drive, CPU, and other hardware resources that are required to run LiveUpdate are unavailable when the computer is in sleep mode. So the behavior you described on your Vista computer sounds as I'd expect, and it's perfectly fine to allow it to sleep.

I'm curious about your XP computer, though, especially since the Norton graph never shows it as having been asleep. It may be that your XP machine is, in fact, never going to sleep. This can happen because an application is simply preventing the operating system from putting the machine to sleep. Vista makes this scenario difficult, if not impossible, and that's one of the sleep-related differences between Vista and XP.

Running a screensaver is also fine, and it won't prevent Auto LiveUpdate from running when it needs to. It may delay some updates (due to fullscreen mode detection), but it'll run.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Thanks for the help. I have just started to use just screensaver and the Auto Live Updates are coming no longer than every 10 minutes, but I have noticed that even when I put it in sleep that I do get the updates after I wake it up after about only 10 minuted so I guess it's safe either way .I did read on this forum that Idle Full Scan needs to be in Idle so that's why I decided to use screensaver more.
