greetings kbar2000…i too have a similar issue and cannot seem to find a resolution. i am using system works 2005 and from within it i ususally keep the configuration set at “auto protect enabled”. i have noyiced afetr reboot as well that the “little red x appears” and i need to go into the control utilty to re check the preference. Looking forward to a fix soon. win xp sp2, dell laptop.

I'm sure I've seen some references to what you describe but with more recent versions than 2005 but hang on for one of the Norton Staffers who will have a back history on things like this.

This problems often accures due to the imagepath in the registry does not updates correctly.
What you can try is to use the tool on this link: http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2006091413515806
It is designed for NIS/NAV 2007 but should do the trick for 2005 as well.
Please let know how it went, I can give you manual steps if it does not work.
Just an heads up: NIS / NAV 2005 does not support IE7 fully so if you have any scripts problems with Norton either upgrade to NIS/NAV 2008 or downgrade to IE 6.
