Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine

I am running OS X 10.7.3.  Just today I started receiveing the message "Norton AntiVirus Error.  AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine.  Please run Live Update to get the latest version."  I ran Live Updatye .  Still got the same message.  Then uninstalled NIS and reinstalled NIS. Still get same message.

I'm not really involved with the virus definitions process, since it's completely automated, so I can't be of much help here. However I will try to contact the right people and see if they know what's going on. Just to be sure, this is happening only on a machine with 10.4.11 PowerPC machine. Could you also please post the virus definitions date as shown in the Norton AntiVirus application, and run the following command in the Terminal application:

ls -la /Library/Application\ Support/Symantec/AntiVirus/Engine

and copy & paste the results here.

Thanks,

Ryan

The last couple of days updates have been okay.

If the issue re-surfaces I will bump this thread.

I ran LiveUpdate today to get the latest sigs.  Live Update ran fine and reported that the latest sig were downloaded and processed.

Later on I restarted my machine.  During start-up  I got the error:

"Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine.  Please run LiveUpdate to get the latest version. (Code: 6)"

So, I ran LU again, but it reported that everything is up-to-date...

MacOSX 10.4.11 PPC

Norton Antivirus 11.0.3.f25 (Stand-alone version)

LiveUpdate 5.1.1f18

Moved to the thread of its own

This occurred again after running LIveUpdate today for the daily defs.

"Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine.  Please run LiveUpdate to get the latest version. (Code: 6)"

Virus Definitions Date: 10/29/09 shown in the NAV app, but Auto-Protect will not turn on.

Hey Tim,

Do you use a HFS+ Case Insensitive volume? I remember that you use FileVault, but that didn't seem to make a difference. Our QA was not able to replicate this on a Tiger Mac OS X 10.4 volume.

Ryan

HFS+, not case sensitive.

This seems to happen every now and then after a LiveUpdate defs update.

I just DL'd the standalone defs installer and that seemed to allow Auto-Protect to start working agian...

I have the same problem that has just started, and now I am without virus protection.  I've tried reinstalling Norton Antivirus and restarting the system with no luck.

Ed

Symantec was able to help me with this problem by using their removal tool for mac that cleared the system of all Norton files.  I then reloaded Norton Internet Security 5 for Mac, and now everything is back to normal - for the time being.  Thanks Symantec staff for your help.

Ed

Exactly the same issue.  I upgraded to v12 last night on my new Macbook Pro running 10.7.3  Fresh install of everything, mac straight out of the box and I get the Scan Engine could not be loaded. I tried updating [Norton] and am told I am it's up-to-date, however against each update is a red cross rather than expected a green tick.  Am I missing something ??

regards

Symantec advised me to totally remove all of the Norton files using their removal tool for mac

and then reinstall the product.  This worked for me.  You'll require your product key from your Norton users account.

Good luck, Ed
