I wish to express my displeasure in dealing with my recent renewal of Norton Int Sec. Near the end of the process, I was informed that my renewal would include a mandatory automatic renewal untill I explicitly opt out. I consider that a red flag that I am dealing with a scam organization, and I personally do not allow these type of transactions. I would have no problem with an opt-in offer, but the opt-out is dishonest, in my opinion. I have used Norton products for more that a decade and have only had minor problems like download issues and such. On this occasion, I was disturbed to find that the option to disable this "feature" was in fact, not available in my Norton account. I renewed it anyway, thinking that perhaps after renewal, the option to disable would be available. It was not. I therefore needed to contact Norton support to have them disable the auto-renewal, which was done quickly. I have no complaint with the CS reps. My overall impression of this incident was that Norton was becoming a scam type operation like those ads you see on TV to spped up your PC. Before you try to tell me that customers prefer the convenience of auto-renew, let me explain what I think is wrong with this policy. 1) It is never OK to automatically charge a customer's credit card without their expressed approval. 2) You should not provide an opt-out only policy where money is invloved. Only an opt-in policy should be used. 3) If there is an opt-out only policy, the option should be available on the same screen 4) If you provide the opt-out policy on a different page, you need to make sure that it actually works 5) A company that offers computer security products should be extremely careful to protect their image as honest and trustworthy, and not emulate scam artists.
