AV-comparatives.org bad test results

Hi hok

Thanks for the amended link info...got worried for a minute ......thought my "clicking finger" wasn't working !

The latest AV-Test was for Win 7.

Also for hidden malware and rootkits, NIS 2011 scored average. No surprises in this test.

NIS 2011 receives the highest score (99.5%) in AV Comparatives most recent Whole Product Dynamis Tests.

(Edited. Note: AV-Comparatives does not allow linking to anything other than the main site.)

I read them all, and one thing I've learned over the years is that statistics often obscure as much as they reveal (you know, the old "figures don't lie but liars can figure" adage).  The numbers are useful, and give the image of some objectivity (and they do try obviously) but they don't tell the whole story.

The eternal quest for empirical (irrefutable?) data to measure a product's worth/performance/value for the dollar doesn't take into account endless variables among users and machines.  Things like computer brand, firmware, installed applications, network configuration, machine configuration, processors, and so on all have a potential impact on computer and software performance.  Then throw user habits, knowledge, and so on into the mix to add even more possibilities for issues.

No AV software or security suites are 100 per cent.  I use NIS because it works well for me (and because I've learned how to resolve issues with it), but I'm not in love with any computer brand, OS, processor, or software (AV or otherwise).  All I care about is that people use one - any one.  Yet I still see a lot of machines with no protection whatsoever, and OS/software woefully out  of date.

The way I look at it, if it works it works.  My defenses are good.  I don't pick up malware.  But thanks to my school-age knuckleheaded nieces and nephews, and a few hapless friends, I've learned a thing or two about malware removal.  Judging from their indifference toward computer security and maintenance, I'm thinking I have job security for quite a while.  The pay is lousy though.

Regards,

Kelly

100% if you count the 0.5% user dependent.

I will stick with the overall ranking.

It was Advanced whereas it should be Advanced+.

Dr.Web wouldn’t crack

November 9, 2009

The Dr.Web anti-virus from Doctor Web turned out to be the only one out of 7 widely used anti-virus programs that wouldn’t give in to participants of the International Alternative Workshop on Aggressive under the aegis of the ESIEA.

The first (International Alternative Workshop on Aggressive Computing and Security was held on October 23-25 in Laval, France. As a part of the event seven anti-viruses were tested to determine if their self-protection could be disabled in sixty minutes. Anti-viruses were tested on Windows machines and testers had administrator’s privileges in the systems.

The test showed that self-protection of anti-viruses from such vendors as Kaspersky Lab and Eset could be disabled in 40 and 33 minutes respectively while the defence mechanism of Norton Antivirus would break much sooner, in 4 minutes. The McAfee anti-virus was the quickest to fall and surrendered to testers in 2 minutes. AVG and G Data anti-virus solutions also failed to pass the test. Russian Dr.Web was the only anti-virus that wasn’t disabled in sixty minutes. All vendors that participated in the testing received information about vulnerabilities found in their products.

This news I read  earlier on russian on cnews site:

http://www.cnews.ru/news/top/index.shtml?2009/11/10/369201

That practically changed since norton 2009? May be interface and number or sonar engine only...

Nice info

Bt their is quite some criticism about the tests and their ability in proving the ability of the AV

Happy Easter to all

And did anybody ask them?)

May be Symantec company ask to test nowadays Norton edition? And (as I think) to view that the Norton 2011/2012 will be cracked in a few minutes or may be 20 minutes? Self defence tests are not the filed of Norton. Activation patches, cracking and penetration into product items on HDD or in RAM are shown it.

I do not want to tell taht Norton is worse, it is only normal as not so few, but can be better if Symantec will saw some critics in their product address.

I'm see Norton since NIS 2009 product (+ NAV 2007) and saw many faults in it. Since summer 2010 I'm in this community, but not many beautiful ideas Symantec want to listen from me and others.

Why?

Only money.

Company have a great field in the market. Many non-advanced users and users have only Norton on their computers can't say that Norton it not good - they are did not see respectable capabilities of other AV engines. They can't to compare. Norton old vs Norton new and that is all. So such people buy Norton products every year, and use them. many money comes to Symantec and company did not want to change anything - only sometimes and critical bugs. What for to change? There no reasons - there are so many money already - company is happy already, so what for it will be trying for users?.. Users are fileds of money and company is like grain harvester combine. Great capabilities and wonderful effectiveness and other firstly introduces know how probably will be not the prerogative on Symantec's products ever.  Many great ideas are only deadly taking it places in ideas section. Since I'm not see them in Norton 2012 beta.

This forum there are users gives the second chance to Norton registering here and wirte symptoms and asking what to do - Symnatec employees as a rule not answering and other typical users replies tio them and in the end post the 4 links to other forums where all users gets real Support with big first letter. product not the best, support is very low and name of that is Symantec. They are even not will thinking about my words as i just one of many typical users.

Today is not so easy to infect Norton computers, but against already infected (active infections) incedents Norton passes - can't recognize them and computer with big label 'secured by Norton' still staying compromized.
