AVG root kit scan found 3 threats - what to do?

I ran AVG 2011 (free edition) root kit scan and found three threats listed below which it did not remove.

Should I remove them or are they false positives?

AVG does not work well with Norton and is not meant to do so.  Antivirus engines do not like each other.  Those are Norton virus definitions. You will need to remove one or the other using the correct tool.

The user obviously has Norton on board.  This is not what I would consider spamming, but a valid question.

It is very typical for rootkit detection programs to alert to files that belong to security programs installed on a PC.  In order to protect your system such programs as Norton often must use rootkit-like methods.  Rootkit detectors do not differentiate between malicious and benign hidden files - they simply report anything that looks like it was trying to hide.  For this reason, unless you really know what you are doing and what each detection means, you should never remove anything based solely on a rootkit scan, as you could easily find that you have removed something that was critically important to something on your system.

I will uninstall AVG since I have Norton 360. Do I need to do anything else to make sure All Avg files are removed? Will I have enough protection if I have Norton Only? Should I scan with someother software once in a while to see if there is anything which Norton did not catch?

I gave you the removal tool for AVG in my previous post.  Your security will actually improve as two antivirus engines often interfere with security.  Remove it through add/remove first and then run the tool and reboot.  Check Norton to make sure everything is working well.

 

Many of us use Malwarebytes free version as an on demand scanner for a second opinion.

Your installation of N360 might have got damaged by running this rootkit scanner also. It may be necessary for you to remove N360 and reinstall it again also.

 

What prompted you to run a rootkit scan in the first place? Are you getting any odd behaviors which might suggest that you have a rootkit? Thanks.

I read somewhere that running rootkit scans may be helpul. If i remove Norton 360 and try to reinstall will I have problems with activation code since I have already used it?

 

If that is nto an issue I paln to reformat my PC and install all the software again? I have backed up my other files and pictures I need. That way I can be assured that my PC is malware free.

 

I have installed the malwarebytes free edition for on demand scan.

 

BTW, I have uninstalled AVG using the uninstall function. Their website says to use the uninstall tool only if install doe snot work or stalls. So i hope that this is okay.
