Back up file and Print out of Norton Identity Safe information

Today I realized I have 140 logins in norton's identity safe and only about 40 of them typed in manually into an Excel spreadsheet.  I want to be able to print out the information as a written back up of the information at least on a monthly basis and I would also like to have an electronic unencrypted document or Excel formatted file that I can reference when needed.  Reviewing Forum items regarding this question it appears that Norton does not permit this to be done unless (1) you allow your subscription to expire, then (supposedly) you can retrieve the information in a .csv file which can be opened in a readable format by Excel, or (2) back up the file in a NPM file format that can only apparently be opened by Norton since it is encrypted (and if that is the case then I am back to square one unable to a printable, readable file format, both manually and electronically).  SInce this information is MY information, I don't understand why I have to go through hoops in order to get it in a manual and electronic backup format (that is readable)?  If I open the NPM file in a text format it is encrypted and is basically useless.  If I have to let my subscription expire in order to get the information in .csv file format so I can have it electronically and a manual print out for backup, then I can only technically get this backed up once a year in a readable format, each time going through the pain of letting the subscription expire, and then have to renew again (?), ie another 100+ logins will not be recorded.   So if I go on vacation and use another computer, unless I manually write down my passwords or type them manually into Excel or another format text file, I can't get on to sites.  Does this make any logical sense?  Again the information is MINE.  Why can't I get it printed out or in a format electronically that I can read and backup?  If someone has a true solution for this please respond and let me know.  Thanks!

Hi WayneCZ,

Beginning with Norton Internet Security 2011, it is possible to export Identity Safe data as a .csv file at any time, rather than having to wait until the expiration of the license.  I do not use Norton 360, but I would certainly assume that version 5, now in Beta, would also have this capability.  Perhaps Huwyngr or someone else with this installed could check in the Help center under "Identity Safe, exporting data" to verify if this is so.  With a valid subscription to a current version, you would be able to upgrade for free when the next version is officially released.

I currently have Norton 360 Version 4.3.0:5 that is the most updated version available.  You can backup your data in a NPM file but you cannot print it out.  IF you take it to another Norton computer to load it on there, it apparently can be done, but again not in a printable or downloadable file format. Only into the Identity Log information format.

For Hugh, the problem is that the coexport.exe file option will NOT work if you have a current copy of Norton 360 working on your computer (or any working Norton software).  You MUST let the Norton expire on your computer to be able to access that executable file.  It gives the following error message when I tried earlier to execute the file/program:

Export Tool

This tool can only be used when your subscription for the product has expired.  Please use the Backup Identity Safe Data task on the Identity Safe main window.

When I did that, it saves it as an NPM file format which is encrypted and will only open with Norton software on another computer, which then again would leave me in the same situation, without a printable, savable, readable file.

Obviously if they have put the functionality into Norton 2011 enough people have complained about this world wide.  If so why not put it into an update for all Norton users of their software?

I can't check out N360V5Beta until later this afternoon but I'll do it then after checking to see if anyone else has covered it or not.

N360V5Beta export tool works even when N360 is installed.

But there is one problem, if you have login data only for your limited user / standard user account.

Then yo get a message that no profile was found.

If you have a Identity Safe profile for your admin account as well, the export works only for the logins of the admin account profile.

ok it's beta ... i report it on beta forum.

Update / Edit:

A  problem with the export only happens, if you are logged in to your Identity Safe profile, when you want to export it.

I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but it would seem to me that one could export the NPN file to a flash drive (from the desktop) and then be able to import it into the Laptop that has a Norton program already installed on it.  It could in fact be done before leaving home so that the Laptop ID Safe data was the same as the desktop at the time they left home.  Don't even have to carry a flash drive with them that way!

I know this does not get them printed out, but if they are a flash drive - do you really need them printed out?

That’s correct yank, you can apparently do as you said. But if you leave Norton you can’t open the NPM file. Also, what if you want to sign in to a site from someone else’s computer, or work computer, or other computer that doesn’t use Norton? Their should be a functionality to allow you to at any time get all of these log ins all at once into a printable and file format (.csv file apparently using Excel) at any time you, the user, wants it. But apparently, if you stop using Norton, and all of it’s files are not uninstalled from your computer, you can get the information in a .csv file format. So apparently I just have to let the product expire in order to get the information or go through each log in one by one and retype them into Excel. That is probably what I will have to eventually spend the time doing because I don’t have 100% confidence that after I stop using Norton it will let me get the information. Kind of a “Catch 22”? Joseph Heller would be proud of Norton …

I won't check out N360 V5 just now in view of Mp3jo's reports since in any case I don't have any data in the Identity Safe on that test bed -- it does only have the one full administrator user set up on it however.

I always install utilities I trust -- including Norton -- using Run as Administrator. I wonder if that makes any difference to the difference Mp3jo reports between a limited user or full Administrator -- it should I think since isn't it supposed to give elevated privileges during installation.

I tend to give elevated privileges to my personal limited user account anyway ......

Wayne,

<< So apparently I just have to let the product expire in order to get the information or go through each log in one by one and retype them into Excel. >>

It would seem from Mp3jo's messages that when you upgrade to N360V5 you could then export in CSV and you can import a CSV file into Excel (and probably other spreadsheets. especially Open Office?) without having to retype.

Hello Wayne

I know this won't help you now, but you can post your new idea over in the New Idea part of the Forum. Perhaps if enough people like this idea, they will kudo it in that section. Some users ideas have made it into the products.

I tried what you said Jo but even when not logged in to Identity safe and not even on the net, Norton coexport file would not work The Norton must be expired apparently in order for that executable file to import the login data into an Excel file in a .csv file format.

Hi WayneCZ,

this works only with N360 v5 Beta, not with N360 v4.

And - v5 is still beta -  there seem to be some problems if more than one user account is used with different login data.

The best way to backup logins seems to be with an npm-file on usb or another external drive.

I have the same request as WayneZ.  I often travel to relatives & friends (who do not have Norton on their computer, or don't want me to overlay their own Identity Safe data), and would like to be able to print or export to csv my login information.  Any idea when V5 will be available?

Release dates are never disclosed in advance ... all we know is that there is a current beta in public testing which is usually a stage before it goes to manufacturing.

Well I kind of look at it this way. I have 25 days left on my subscription. If Version 5.0 is not out at that time I will let this subscription expire, get access to my passwords in an Excel format so that I have a copy of them all, and then decide what to buy out there. It amazes me that if I buy on line I have to buy a subscription to also be able to download it again on line WHEN it fails at some point during the subscription, but if I buy it in a store, I can just reload it with the CD. Plus in a store it is about 2/3’s the price of buying it on line, IE renewing my subscription. It should be the opposite way around, especially since I am an existing customer. SO I am pretty much resigned to letting it expire, using Microsoft’s free software and Windows Defender, and shopping for the best deal for a 3 computer usage I can find. I do like the password vault save feature, but it isn’t that useful if you can’t functionally have a readable backup in hand.
