Back Up Problem

I am running Norton 360 V5.1.0.29.  The Norton Icon in my system tray is showing a red X. When I open 360 it says "Backup at Risk. Backup not completed recently". I am backing up to an external harddrive. When I click on "Backup Now" it runs for a while and I then get an error message that says "There is a backup problem. Make sure destination drive is connected and try again". Destination drive is connected and accessible so I do not know what is causing the error. Last successful backup was on 5/25.

Thanks for the quick response.........but.............I am running Vista on a fairly new Dell desktop. Up until this week or so, backup was proceeding automatically. It is not a timeout problem because I can sit and watch it try to run, go through  five minutes of file names while the meter stays at 0% and then shut down with the error message. No question that the destination drive is properly connected. I can see the May 25 Norton backup there.

Margaret,

So far so good. What happend about the time the backup problem started? Updates, new programs installed, etc.? Also, is there any other security software loaded, even if it's not running? I think Dell provides some type of security, just like microsoft. If either is present and was updated it might have changed its state from disabled to enabled. Another possibility is that you picked up some sort of 'nasty' along the way. You might download the free version of Malwarebytes scanner and run it. Be sure to update it before you run it.

maybe some help here?
