I have Norton 360 Version 5.1.0.29, and I am running it on an HP laptop with Vista Home Premium. These Background Tasks are becoming very aggravating. Very often when I am working on a project and leave the computer for about 5 minutes, I get this small box in the bottom right of my computer that says, "Norton 360 is currently performing background tasks." At this time, I can't do ANYTHING on my computer -- Norton takes it over completely. The only way of getting back to work is to restart the computer -- and this can result in lost work. This is not acceptable. There MUST be a fix for this problem.
I have seen the posts that say that I can disable some tasks under "Settings," and I have done that. I have also seen that I can run in "Silent Mode" for up to one day. This isn't FIXING the problem. Please HELP.

Welcome,
Sorry you are having a problem. Can you give us a bit more information about your system. It will help us help you. How much RAM is installed and how full is your hard drive?
Open 360, click on settings, click on task scheduling, remove the check mark from those tasks yoou do not want 360 to perform. Click on the scheduling tab and set the schedule to Manual Schedule.
No -- I tried that previously. The Background Tasks still run and it locks up the computer. I've seen this "solution" in previous messages. They too say that it doesn't work.
Just curious, since it occurs within 5 minutes, could you Click on Performance on the Main page of N 360 and ensure CPU is highlighted (yellow) on the lower portion. Anything Yellow within the chart is Norton useage, and anything Blue is other CPU useage. When the 5 minutes are up, can you see which color is using the most CPU?
Also if you hover over a high point, using the blue arrow that will appear on the tip of the finger, a left click will tell you which processes are using the CPU. This information may provide handy in tracking down what is causing the lockup.
Please provide us with feedback, if you do the above!
