Backing up to a NAS

I am using Norton 360 to backup data to a Seagate 3T Goflex Home NAS.  Runing on Gigabite Ethernet.  Managing the backup seems to be slow.  Right now, I am deleting an old backup set and it is deleting around 1 file per second, ther are over 15,000 files and it is going to take a will.  The questions: Is this normal? If not, what can I check/change that could speed up the connectivity?
