So what circumstances will cause an automatic backup to occur (or NOT). It seems that seven days without a backup is not ideal. I have dozens of new and updated files that have not been backed up, little blue icon modifiers all over.

The Automatic Backup will happen only when your computer enters an IDLE state or "not in use". If the computer gets out of the Idle state before the backup could complete, it needs to start all over again. In such cases, it is better to run backup manually since the Idle time is not enoough for the automatic backup to complete.
