I have been using Ghost 15 (on Vista SP2) successfully for imaging drives and backing up individual files. Recently it lost the ability to backup file and it took me days to realize that the last time I WAS able to use that function, there were two drives in my machine. The secondary drive, also running Vista, was intended for use while troubleshooting the primary but when that crisis passed, I formatted the secondary and started using it just for storage. It's the formatting that broke the application.
I've tested my theory: I put an image back on the secondary and found I could back up with no problem. I then closed Ghost (but left the services in automatic) and formatted the 2nd drive. Started Ghost again and the backup function was kaput. Rebooted - no change. I Imaged C: at that point, thinking maybe it'd capture a new baseline, but no luck. I also repeated the entire procedure to make sure I knew at what point it broke.
I can make a full image either drive and I can recover either one but I cannot use the file backup function unless both drives have Vista on them. It seems like it "doesn't know" I formatted the 2nd drive even though it was running and even after I made an image of the new configuration.
The error I receive (after clicking the "Run or Manage Backups" option followed by "Backup My Documents"):
Cannot add protection
-Error E1AD993C: Cannot add protection.
--The server threw an exception. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80010105 (RPC_E_SERVERFAULT))
(UMI:V-0-429-39228)
Again, I can create images of the drives until the cows come home - but I cannot backup individual files anymore.
Hope someone has an answer to this - I need that 15Gb back. Also, I want the option of running this antique with one drive b/c I don't want to put another penny into it. (So when one of them goes, I could still stretch the lifespan of the system a bit further w/o trying to find a working IDE drive.)
