Backup set worthless after moving to other disk

After a crash earlier this year i moved a backupset to an new second hd in my computer.

Now i want to unpack the backup set but Nortin 360 doesn't recognise it. The dutch support desk told me that a backupset isn't usable because it was moved. I have little hope that the guys from NL-support are wrong, yet i'll try.

Hi tjeerdheerbaart.

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums. :smileyhappy:

The support desk may be right but in the circumstances it might be worth trying a little experiment.

First - all N360 backup sets expect to live in a root folder called -

N360_BACKUP

Is that where you have put yours?  If not you might like to put the backup folders into a root folder of that name.

How many folders have you got in your backup set?  The folder names should be something like -

{9AB5473C-0524-414B-B73E-0185FDECE589}

Are there any files in the directory along with the folders mentioned above?  Ideally you are looking for two files -

arestore.loc, and

arestore.exe

If these files are not in the N360_BACKUP directory look for them in your N360 setup on your HD and copy them to the folder.

Once you have done that you might like to report back.  Or if you are feeling bold you might like to try running the -

arestore.exe from within N360_BACKUP and see what happens.  It might offer to restore your files for you.

I hope that helps.  Do let us know how you get on.

P.S.  As you say that you moved the files to the new computer, presumably you still have them on the old medium and that is accessible.  Why not restore them from there?

Hi Andmike,

I just *knew*  there must be a solution.

I've found arestore.exe and .loc in a newer diretory. Don't ask why.

From my system is a backup made every night on n external HD in another building. My wife's pc was'nt backed up    since then.

I do believe the backupset on my system is hers.

With the explorer i find ther backupset: 68.000 files and 55Gb. Now AREstore has counted it can restore som 33.000 files and 30GB.

i'will put them at work.

Thnx very much Andmike. Ill report how it went on.

HI Andmike.

I've done what you described.

I run ARestore.exe in a rootdir with all these backupsets and .Loc file.

Arestore succeeded in restoring more than 33.000 files/30Gb.

Unfortunately it wasn't the backup from the computer I was looking for.

Thanks anyway for your help. Outstanding.

And I will inform the dutch supportdesk about this.

Hello again tjeerdheerbaart.

Thanks for the feedback.

Glad it worked in principle.  :-)

Pity it was the not backup you wanted.  :-(

Hope you manage to find the backup you wanted....

Sorry I took a while to respond but I have been away from my computer for a few days.
