Backup to second internal HD?

I have the Norton system provided thru Comcast.

I have a second HD installed internally. I want to send my backups there but it appears that Norton only wants you to use removable media.

I tried a chat, but the tech only spoke in canned phrases and never understood the question! Wanted to take control of my computer and fix it!

If this can be done, then how? Otherwise the backup feature ius useless to me.

This thread would indicate to me that it should work.  Yogesh has provided information on how to obtain more details.  I don't use N360 so if this doesn't help, hopefully one of the others will be available later.

Sorry, that does nothing but say RTFM.  That is no help at all.

Sorry JimTN01:

The Comcast product is specifically configured by Symantec for Comcast.  There aren't a large number of users yet.  Some testing has been done by one of our gurus, Phil_D, but I don't know if he tested the backup.  I will ask him to provide you with some info.

In the meantime, you should have a setting on your screen that says "Manage Backups."  Is there anything in that area that allows you to configure what to back up and where to put it, prior to running the backup?

Try these steps:

1. Make sure that the device(internal drive) to which you want to back up your data is connected to your PC and turned on.
2. In the Norton Security Suite main window, move the pointer over Backup, and click Manage Backup Sets.
3. On the Where tab, select the location and device(internal drive) where you want your backups to be stored.
4. If the device or location does not appear on the list, click Refresh.
5. Click Save Settings.

6. Run or schedule backup as you need.

No.

It lists a CD drive and two thumb drives. There is no way that I can see to add to that list. Nothing like "add" or browse.

NO internal drives are shown, before or after refresh, and there seems to be no way to add them.

That is the essence of my question.

I thank you for your help, but please try to understand the question. Quoting the help doesn't help.

Does the internal drive show up under the list of drives in MY COMPUTER section?

Also, make sure that drive letters are properly assigned to the drives, and is shown under the list of drives in Windows Disk Management. Norton 360 will show the internal drive under the backup locations only if it is properly recognized through a drive letter in Windows Disk Management.

Of course it does. I use it for storage and backups all the time. Please don't assume that I'm stupid - I've been doing this stuff for fifty years!  The question is why Norton limits its offer only to removable media, and if there is away around it.

Please try to be a bit patient.  We can't see your machine, we don't know you or how much experience you have, and we are all volunteers trying to assist you.  We have to work through troubleshooting without the advantage of being able to see what you are seeing, or the advantage of having the same version on our machines.  If Comcast has it set up that way to make the maximum use of their own off-line storage, it isn't something we will be able to do anything about.

I have left a message for Phil_D again to check his Comcast version for similar behaviour. He is off-line at the moment but will be back later.

There is also a Comcast Support Forum where someone else may have brought up this issue.  It requires a Comcast sign in so I can't have a look.

Comcast Support

Hello JimTN01,

When I "checked out" the Comcast Norton Security Suite upon its release, I only tested it for a 24 hour period on a computer with a single internal hard drive. I no longer have it installed.

I am searching on the Comcast forums, but have not found an answer yet.

Out of curiosity, Is your "C" drive visible as a backup destination? (I know you would not want to use it, just inquiring as to what drives are presented as options)

No. Only the two thumb drives (4 GB each) and one CD  drive. Not the DVD drive nor anything else. Interestingly their examples show backups to the C: drive!

I watch a Comcast forum, too, but the only post there seems to be mine!

While I guess that this package is OK, the backup seems useless.

ftw, it must be something with your system, because I have the Comcast version of 360 and I can backup to my non-bootable internal drive...Win7-32 Home Premium, P4/3.4, 2MB

Interesting.  Could the backup ability to certain places be different using different accounts such as user and administrator, or run as administrator?

This may also happen if your Windows Management Instrumentation Repository file is damaged. You can try the steps re-create the WMI Repository.

1. Click Start > Run.
2. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
3. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Stop.

4. Close the Services window.

5. Navigate to the following folder from My Computer:

C:\Windows\System32\wbem

6. Delete the "repository" folder.

7. Click Start > Run.
8. Type the following and click OK.
services.msc
9. The Services window appears. In the right pane, right-click  Windows Management Instrumentation service, and select Start.

10. Restart the computer.

11. Go to backup settings, and try refreshing the backup location.

Thank you for that advice. Unfortunately it didn't work, and in fact one of the thumb drives shows up TWICE!

I assume now that my system - XP Sp3 - Firefox, just will not support the backup process in Norton.

As a purely side issue, I find that Norton takes a very long time to open after a restart.

Just to check, are you asking N360 to do a full system backup, or are you specifying backup C:drive only?
