Backup won't recognize my external hard drive

My initial PC hard drive melted, and a backup was restored to a new external hard drive.  Unfortunately, I can't get the backup to recognize the external drive, even though I plugged it in both before and after launching 360.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I really need to get the data.
