Bad Windows Image

Ever since I installed the NIS 2012 yesterday, I am getting frequent error message after the PC has been idle for some time saying that a .dll is a bad windows image and that I should check my installation disk.  This happened when I tried to start Firefox and again when I tried to start the MS Word.  Each time I had to restart Windows and everything works fine.  Yesterday after this error message occurred I noticed that auto-protect of the NIS2012 was off and I could not turn it on.  When I restated windows, the NIS 2012 worked fine.

Unfortunately I did not take note of the dll file names, except for the Firefox error which was the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\xul.dll

Any help would be appreciated since I am having doubts about having installed the upgrade from NIS 2011 to NIS 2012.

I had the exact same issue.  I have always run Norton Antivirus and yesterday I upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2012.  When the computer is idle for an extended period of time, when I come back, the system is a mess.  It's not just Firefox, it's any application I want to use.  I also cannot switch between user profiles and sometimes I am even asked for a password even though I don't password protect my PC.

Any information would be appreciated.  Is this because of the firewall conflict?  Does Antivirus have the same problem?

Joseph,

If you do run the Noron Power Eraser as HarryP suggests to take note of what it says on that download screen:

Because the Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect these threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. You should use this tool very carefully, and only after you have exhausted other options.

I have seen it strongly advised here that when you run it you should NOT let it deal with everything it flags WITHOUT first consulting with the experts here since that POWER includes the ability to delete a Windows system file that could stop your computer from working !!!!

So if it reports anything wrong I suggest you report back here and ask for advice and you may be asked to copy a list here.

Hope that helps protect you ....

I confirm what Sportas2 said;

The problem occurs when the PC is idle for a long time.  I was also asked for a password to return from the screen saver when the 'On resume, password protect' is not ticked on the screen saver settings.

I did follow the advise above and run the Power Eraser tool.  I got one bad file cm_soace.exe and fixed that (and probably lost one game).

I updated the NIS and run a full scan.  I left it running and got the screen saver.  After a couple of ours, I had to use the internet and when I run the MS Internet Explorer I got an error from The AcroRd32.exe saying that the uxtheme.dll in windows/system32 is a bad image etc.

On restarting windows,  CHKDSK was carried out automatically.  Otherwise, everything seems to work fine now.

I hope this throws some light on the problem for a quick solution.
