Big problems uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2006

I have had a subscription with Norton AntiVirus since 2006 but was given free protection as a part of my broadband package and so when my subscription ran out i tried and failed to remove Norton 2006 in order to install the new software. i wasn't entirely impressed to have to pay out for a new subscription when i had free protection waiting to be used.

then Symantec recently offered me a free upgrade to 2009. i started to download it and the connection hung. when i reconnected to the internet my AntiVirus was not working because it now needed verification. this failed each time i tried to verify the account. i contacted online support who made two lengthy and unsuccessful attempts to remove 2009 and restore 2006 as it was working perfectly ok before the upgrade was attempted.

i have since manged to remove 2009 and found the disc for 2006 - even with the disc i can't uninstall the program!

the last attempt had the uninstall program running for over 24 hours and it still didn't work.

Live Update won't uninstall either and slows down the startup dramatically despite being 'successfully uninstalled' a number of times. i have since been informed that my subscription (that still had over 170 days left on it) has expired because the product wasn't verified within 15 days.

i am really unimpressed with all this as i can't actually speak to anyone apart from the jokers who think doing a follow up call at 1am is a good idea.

is there any way to permanently and completely remove all elements of this AntiVirus? And is there anyway of contacting customer services to register my complaints? All suggestions gratefully recieved.

p.s. 2nd attempt to post this - wasn't surprised to see an 'unexpected error' message
