Big Sur crashes

Apparently I made a mistake upgrading to MacOS Big Sur. Now Norton 360/Lifelock is causing my system to crash every few minutes. Fortunately I was able to uninstall Norton between crashes. Any suggestions on what to do? Dump info from MacOS follows:

Hi @Flugel,

I have sent you a private message requesting additional information. Could you please check your inbox when you get a chance? Thanks.

-Gayathri

Looks to me like Quarantine version 4 is just one of the loaded kernel extensions. No, I haven't experienced anything about any files or directories quarantined.

FWIW!! In your original posting of the debug log, there is an entry that has been a known issue since the Sierra release. The entry is " $quarantine 4 ". Its attributed to Gatekeeper / watchdog timeout kernel panic. Have you had any notifications before installing Norton there were files or directories quarantined ?

Cheers

Allow me to flag a moderator. Someone from Norton may at some point send you a PM and notify you here of that. Most likely they will request system logs, and will give you instructions about how to get those for them.

Edited: What is your Norton product version? The latest is 8.6 if I am seeing the correct information.

Cheers

Thanks for the pointer, but it appears the Norton menu option to uninstall successfully removed the extension as well as the rest of the application. The systemextensionstctl command says 0 extensions installed. I'm not getting any crashes as long as Norton isn't installed.

Hello Flugel. Look at the solution in this older post here on the forums. It will guide you to removal of the offending com.symantec.mes.systemextension instance. Reboot when done. That should correct the panic and crashing.

As for reinstalling your Norton product, I cannot recommend it for various reasons. One is cpu panic and other issues have been present since Catalina, and secondly, I'm not a current MAC user so I don't know all the in's and out's of the OS in general. You could reinstall from your Norton account and get all the updates available, making sure you restart after each set accordingly. Report what your results are so we can process further.

Cheers
