Blocking of images

Hello,

Can someone tell me if or how the parental controls block images? I understand the web site blocking. If a web site that is considered valid is visited but has objectionable images on it, how are they blocked?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

It depends on how you block access to categories of Web sites.  For example, if you block the category of Advertising, and when a kid visits msn.com and there is an AD image on the msn.com page, the image will be blocked.  See the screen snap please.

Thanks,

Katie

I am having this same problem. We have youtube and flickr blocked but when my son goes to someone else’s site that has an embedded flickr or youtube video it still plays. Our old system did not allow this. It would block those videos from coming up on the page. How can I prevent this from happening?

Hi Herford,

Please tell us the "someone else's site that has an embeded..." the exact site URL, so we can test it out.

Also, what version of Norton Safety Minder you have on the PC. The latest version is 1.2.0.39 and you can determine this by right clicking on the Norton Safety Minder icon in the System tray and selecting About Norton Safety Minder.

Thanks,

Katie

Okay.  The site he was looking at is bikeportland.org.  I have both flickr.com and youtube.com on my blocked list but the videos still come up and can be played.  We are using NSM 1.2.0.39 on Firefox 3.0.17 on Windows XP.

Herford,

I haven't been able to reproduce it.  I received the message that my house rules didn't allow me to  go to www.youtube.com.  Could you try to use IE or Firefox 3.5 to see if it helps?

Thanks,

Katie

My husband will not use IE and I seem to be running into a problem trying to find Firefox 3.5.  We did not upgrade to it, because there seemed to be an issue with your support of 3.5 and now when I try to upgrade it wants to upgrade me to 3.6 which it sounded like there were even more issues with.  I am not sure what to do.  It is still not blocking those videos for us.

Also, I am wondering if we are talking about the same thing.  I cannot click on the movie to make it large or to go to the website, but it does play the movie right on the page.  Does yours not show or play the movie on the page?

Hi Herford,

Thanks for the update.  The program supports Firefox 3.5 and we are working on a new update for Fiirefox 3.6, which will be released very soon.

Please give us a sample movie that you go, the exact pages and links you click on and we will try again.

Thanks,

Katie

Okay.  I updated to Firefox 3.5.7 but the movies still show up and can still be played on this page:

This happens on both a computer running Windows Vista and one running Windows XP...

Hi Herford,

I visited the website that you had provided in your post with yourtube.com and flickr.com on the block list.  I was not able to view the images and video on the page.  Screen snap below shows that they are being blocked.  I was using Windows XP.

Please make sure you have yourtube.com and flickr.com on the block list under "Specific Web sites to block" at Settings -> Web.

Also, are you able to access yourtube.com if you enter it in the URL field directly?

I am sorry to be such a problem, but this is just not working...

I do have both flickr.com and youtube.com listed under "Specific Web sites to block".  If I try to go those specific sites I get a Norton notice but they are still working on the bikeportland website...

herford,

No worries, we are here to help.

I would be more than happy to setup a remote desktop access and work together with you on this.  You're welcome to send me a private message or an email for details.  You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/norton/profile?user.id=15038

Thanks,

Katie
