Thanks, Stu. I'd seen Ad Muncher online and you persuaded me to give it a try. I installed it and... what a relief! But why isn't this part of Norton's Internet Security, when they say their software will do this?
Unfortunately, many websites (Business Week, CNet, etc.) have little areas on their pages with self-advertisements, complete with moving parts. But since they're not fed in by some external source, I guess Ad Muncher can't capture them. Still, it's a huge improvement.

Add blocking does not exists in Norton Internet Security since version 2007. As far as I know, this is because: NIS Add-blocking component needs improvement, and the other reason is that Internet Explorer and other browsers include add/pop-up blocking and they work fine. Sooner or later, add-blocking in NIS should appear again, but there is no information available. One thing is known for sure - Symantec currently focuses on performance and stability.

I've said this before and I'll say it again <g>
So far as I am concerned Internet Explorer does not contain ad-blocking; pop-up perhaps although I use the Google Tool Bar and get it that way but it has never blocked webpage adverts of any kind for me and I can find no controls for ad-blocking in Internet Explorer and I've used 6 and 7.
I was using IE7Pro until someone mentioned SelectView to me and that does it well for me without the overkill of the things in IE7Pro that I don't need but may be worthwhile for others. The link to SelectView is to the CNET site since I couldn't get to the SelectView.org site.
I am sure I saw on the 2009 N.I.S. Beta Board that N.I.S. 2009 will have Ad-Blocking in it again; maybe one of the Norton Staff could confirm if it will or not.
My message dealt with the bit I quoted -- what was in Internet Explorer out of-the-box.
I'll be delighted if Norton bring it back in since it worked well for me until they dropped it.
Personally I do not see much point in asking about future plans -- it will be what it will be, when the time comes. I don't think the last stages of beta development of a project is a good time to ask about beyond that.

Since you brought it up... I couldn't find pop-up blocking in Norton, either, and I've been using the IE pop-up blocker. Which is clunky. If I set it high enough, I can't even click on a link that is configured to open in a separate window. Case in point: The emails Norton sends saying someone replied to my forum posts contain a link to the post, but I can't use it because the pop-up blocker will not let me unless I set blocking to medium.
Btw, I have IE6. Ad Muncher seems to do the job, so I wouldn't upgrade to IE7 just for ad blocking, if it even has it.
I just checked and IE7 does have pop-up blocking as an option under Tool / Popup blocker ON/OFF

What is Pop-up Blocker?Pop-up Blocker is a feature in Internet Explorer that lets you limit or block most pop-ups. You can choose the level of blocking you prefer, from blocking all pop-up windows to allowing the pop-ups that you want to see. When Pop-up Blocker is turned on, you will get an Information bar message saying "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here."
You might haave a look in IE6 to see if it has it in the Menu bar like that.
I find IE7 is good for its multiple Tabs so you can have more than one webpage open at the same time or go from a link in one to a place in another without losing the location you were at.
If you want to try the upgrade you can always backtrack to IE6 by going to Add/Remove Programs and telling it to uninstall IE7. It keeps the IE6 files in case you want to do this.
I have to join you two too as I would also like back and think it would be excellent if they were to have it, if not in N.I.S. 2009 - which I hope they have - but in the next Version of N.I.S. [2010].
