Norton Security has suddenly started blocking outlook express from recieving emails- Pop3 server timeout - Turn off email protection and everything works ok. I have tried changing email settings within norton - Stoping scans of outgoing mails etc but to no avail. Only completely disabling Email scans works. It has worked well upto a couple of days ago.
Hello micktss and welcome to the Community. I also use Outlook Express 6 and so far I am not having any problems. As SendOfJive mentioned, are you still using port 110? If you don't know how to check, open your mail, click on Tools, then Accounts, in the Mail account select your account and click on Properties, then click on Advanced. This should show what outgoing (SMTP) port and incoming (POP3) port you are using. Hope this helps.
Go into Norton Network Settings, Email Protection, Email Antivirus Scan, and click Configure[+]. Make sure "Protect against timeouts" is checked.
If you need to disable Incoming Email Scanning, you should be aware that this does not lessen your protection. Auto-Protect will identify and block any malware on access that email scanning would have detected. You may get a Norton "Fix Now" warning if you disable scanning, but this can be turned off by hovering your cursor over the words, "Email Protection" on the main Norton window and selecting "Ignore" in the pop up. This tells Norton to disregard the on/off status of the email scan setting when monitoring the state of the various protection components.
Nothing in my system has changed. Norton Internet Security 2011, windows Xp Pro Service pack 3. However in the period before disabling Email Scanning and Outlook Express was blocked. I went on line to check my Email (tiscali) alias Talk Talk. When I logged in they told me my password was no longer secure enough - consisting of 6 letters and they now required amin of 8. I changed it online and subsequently in oulook express. But I can't help thinking its something to do with changes at Talk Talks end though they Deny it and blame norton.
It may be just me but try to log in manually to your email account with the password you have installed in Outlook Express. My old fingers sometimes misfinger things and while my eyes 'think' I did it correctly the computer knows better
I have now tried for three days to solve this problem to no avail so I have no option but to leave email protection disabled - which whilst I am still protected against viral threats leaves me unable to stop and filter spam emails - a considerable inconvenience.
I know there is a separate setting for enabling/disableing spam but BOTH email and spam have to be disabled for outlook express to work!
Hopefully Norton will fix this issue in the near future.
