Issue abstract:
There is a blocking UI defect in the Norton Password Manager Chrome extension where a Safety Dashboard pop-up overlays the Logins screen and prevents use of the search field. The pop-up cannot be dismissed, despite displaying a close “X” icon.
Detailed description:
When opening the Norton Password Manager Chrome extension, a Safety Dashboard notification panel appears on top of the Logins interface.
This overlay:
• Blocks the search field
• Prevents searching until it disappears
• Displays a close “X” icon that is not clickable
• Cannot be dismissed, minimized, or deferred
• Remains on screen for an unpredictable amount of time
The presence of a close icon implies user control, but no such control exists. ![]()
Why this is a serious problem:
Search is a primary function of a password manager. Blocking it—even temporarily—breaks core usability, especially in time-sensitive situations.
This is not a warning tied to the current action and cannot be acted on in the moment. It behaves like a forced engagement banner rather than a notification.
Real-world impact example:
I recently opened the extension to retrieve a saved password during an online purchase. The merchant site enforces a short cart timeout.
Because the Safety Dashboard overlay blocked the search field and couldn’t be dismissed, I couldn’t retrieve my credentials before the cart expired. All 23 items were removed, and the purchase had to be restarted.
This was not user error.
It was caused solely by the extension preventing access to its own search function.
Additional notes:
• This occurs consistently when first opening the extension
• It appears unrelated to actual vault password strength
• The message content is generic and not actionable at the moment it appears
Request:
At minimum, the close “X” should function immediately, or the overlay should not block the search field. If this behavior is intentional, users should be given control to dismiss or defer it.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
