I've had Norton 360 on my computer before. My license expired and I uninstalled it, then tried the Norton 360 v5 beta, and uninstalled it too when the trial expired (today).
So, I've been told I should try NIS instead of 360.
I tried to installed NIS right after uninstalling 360 and rebooting. I got a blue screen when the installation said "Initializing Services" (iniciando servicios in Spanish). When Windows started again, the installiation asked me to reboot, which I did. Then, I got trapped in an infinite loop where I keep getting blue screen every time I try to install NIS.
I've erased the Norton Installation folder from Windows' temp folder. NRT is not working for some reason. I just see a bar filling up for less than a second and, although the process is there, the program never appears.
There are a few problems happening. Uninstalling an expired program seems to cause more issues than if it is still running. Installing a beta is never a great idea unless you follow the instructions to image your system before installing it so that you can go back to a clean system. The NRT may not do a clean removal of a beta product, because the product is still in development. Loading NIS over the leftovers after the uninstall of the beta caused more problems.
Probably the best approach is to get into safe mode and try to run the removal tool. You will still have a manual cleanup afterward if the tool runs properly, but it should get most things.
Actually, NRT now worked without even rebooting. I don't know why, but it did. It says it has removed my Norton product. I'll try to install it tomorrow, since I'm running out of time now, and tell you what happens.
It might be best to do a manual search in your system for remaining Norton and Symantec files before reinstalling, just to make sure everything is removed.
