Both my browsers have been hijacked

Hi

both explorer and firefox have been hijacked by a trojan I believe. When I go searching they take me to unrelated shopping sites! It started when I got an annoying pop-up from xp deluxe who got installed and looked like a bona fide microsoft removal tool.

I managed to get rid of that but the browser thing continues.

I read the solutions by 'Quads' and installed and ran Hijack this. I just need to know which bits to tick.

Can you help, the results of the hijackthis scan below- sorry it's so long.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Bathbluesman:

Since not everything shows up on a HJT log, could you also download and run Malwarebytes.  I don't see anything amiss with the HJT log, but others with more practice at it will be along later.  Malwarebytes may tell them more.

http://www.malwarebytes.org

If you have difficulty installing, you may need to go into the install package and change the name of the .exe file.  Same with the program once it's installed.

Update it first and then run a full scan.  Disable system restore and disconnect from the internet first. Paste the log here.

tried downloading malwarebytes and it just gets stuck and I can't go in to rename it. Any other ideas?

DAve

try downloading it from here:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol

also try superantispyware!

Matt

First off, we will need the entire log.  Please run HiJackThis again and select the first menu option (“Do a system scan and save a log file”); when the scan is over,  the log file will open in notepad.  Copy the entire thing and paste / post it here, please.  Also, we need to know what version of Symantec Antivirus you are running, please?  Thanks in advance.

You will need to go into the installation package and change the name of the .exe file to some other name that you will remember.  Once it installs, go into the program file and change the .exe file to the same name.  It should then run.

If not, get back to us.

bathbluesman -

When you go to download MalwareBytes, in the save as dialog box this is where you can change the name to something else ( like jkup2.exe ).  Then find that file and double click on it to install the program.  Go to the C:\ MalwareBytes' AntiMalware directory and rename the mbam.exe file to jkup2.exe .  If you then double click on the renamed file, the AntiMalware program will start and run for you.  Some malware will disable the running of the software based on it's name.

The Hijackthis log is basically there, the processes and OS info is cut off

These 2 entries in hijackthis

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM')

O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user')

Quads

Hi

been through the hoops with this one. here is my Hijack this log. Also I have installed malwarbytes and keep scanning and removing the same files;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\UAC (Rootkit.Trace

C:\WINDOWS\system32\uacinit.dll (Trojan.Agent)

Hope you can help

Dave

Hi:  Bathbluesman:

We wondered what happened to you.  I am going to have this post attached to your previous thread as it is a continuation.  For future reference, if you need to locate your thread, click on your name after you sign in and you will be able to see prior posts.

It would appear that you have the UAC variant of a rootkit.  It will be a long tedious process to remove, so you will have to be patient.

Please download Rootrepeal and provide a log for Quads, who is the rootkit pro, to look at.  We will need another log as well, but Quads will tell you how to send it.

Rootrepeal is here   http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~crutches/RootRepel/

These logs are very important. You might alsdo want to try to use superantispyware. This sounds like some vundo version.

Hi

I Need a GMER log, GMER, http://www.gmer.net/  and "Scan" then "Save"  the log, Post the log section from "DEVICES" section to the end of the log.

Please do not use GMER for anything else as it could cause a crash / BSOD.

I am looking for if there is the Ramdom .dll's and .sys files.

Quads

Hi Everyone,

have done the logs but am unable to post as am limited to 20,000 characters. How do I get round this?

Dave

Go to pastebay and post the logs over there under your Norton forum name. I think pastebay also has a character limit, so you may have to post your logs in two or more sections if that is possible. I have never used pastebay before, but Quads has recommended it in several other threads when helping out people. Then return to the Norton forums and post the pastebay link to your logs, and Quads will look at them when he comes back online.

Ducky

You're most welcome - I'm glad it worked, seeing that I've never had to use pastebay myself so far. Let's see what Quads says when he checks back here. Good luck :-)

Would it be possible to post the link to your pastebay logs over here in the forum as well? Just for the sake of quicker access ;-D

Hi bathbluesman,

<<have done the logs but am unable to post as am limited to 20,000 characters. How do I get round this?>>\

I understand that this is a limitation at the moment and regret the inconvenience. I encourage you to post the log info to the forum, by using the button to paste the logs into the post. I see that pastebay.com appears to be untested by our Website reputation rating system. Hence I would not recommend using it unless, we are sure that it is safe to use.

Thank you very much for your understanding. Please have the logs posted here in the forum by using the button to paste the logs.

Let us know if you need any assistance.

Thanks,

TomV

This Guru wasn't really sure if that website was ok or not. But by a little examinationthe website is related to illegal software as well. So please don't use that anymore
