First and foremost, I'm not a techie and I have a seemingly sporadic problem that has gone from vexing to infuriating; and in several contacts, Symantec tech support has been of absolutely no help whatsoever with this problem.
I have about a five year-old PC with Windows XP SP3 and do all automatic Windows updates, and I have no security software installed other than NIS2012 (and a trial version of Malwarebytes installed just a few days ago) and I do NIS quick scans before every shutdown and manual full scans every 7-10 days.
As a new Norton user I installed NIS2010 via CD and used it for almost a year with never a problem, but after a major NIS system failure Symantec support remotely uninstalled NIS2010 and installed NIS2011. Problems surfaced within minutes after the installation of NIS2011 was completed: when using any browser, several or more times an hour my PC would suddenly stop responding to any keyboard or mouse commands whatsoever (but stored the commands up in a queue for anywhere from one to three minutes or longer, and then would try to act upon them in sequence)... and if it was anywhere within five or six minutes either side of the top of the hour, the "freeze up" might last anywhere from a few minutes to eight or nine minutes. And in checking my NIS2011, without fail every time this problem began it appeared to be when NIS 2011 began updating.
After another major system failure a couple months or so ago, Symantec support remotely installed NIS2012 and the problems not only remained the same, but have gotten worse; ever since installation, beginning with the first time I opened my Outlook Express it now usually takes from one to three minutes (including "timeout" popups) instead of the usual just a few seconds to open, I have increasingly frequent NIS "3048" or other errors requiring rebooting, and, in addition, as of about two weeks ago, the lengthy "near the top of the hour" freeze-up also frequently occurs now near the bottom of the hour as well... which means that now my PC is often completely unusable about 25-30% or more of each hour (this evening I connected my modem at 5:55p and tried to log onto Internet Explorer 9 at 6:02p, but I was unable to get my PC to normally respond to any commands until about 6:50p! This was a first!)
Is there any hope for this seemingly insolvable problem, or should I just dump NIS and go to a competing security system?
Thank you.

I agree,"Nathan" is one of the dimmer bulbs in the candelabra - but with my problem it was always with live tech support, either by on-line chat or telephone (and I won't even go there re the language issues and essentially just "readers of pre-written scripts" on the telephone support... they certainly do try, and are in fact helpful on a lot of things - other than this intermittent but continuing "freeze up" problem.)
And a new-with-NIS2012 problem that I forgot to mention was that often, and seemingly without reason, almost all (80% - 90%) of the the NIS2012 settings "buttons" and descriptive titles on every NIS page will look like they have a dark gray overlay on them. I don't know if this means anything or not, as the buttons are in the proper place and the NIS2012 tray(?) icon and main page indicator both show that NIS is functioning normally, but usually it is only the minor buttons and titles such as anti-spam and anti-phishing that are their normal coloration.... the biggies such as anti-virus and firewall are the ones being grayed out.
