My wife got a browser search redirect virus on her computer a few weeks ago I can't fix. Updated Norton and scanned but did not fix. Tried TFixTDSS and rkill but no improvement. Effects all browsers (chrome, ie, foxfire), switches browser search to click.livesearchnow.com and then sometimes to 63.209.69.107 (SCOUR) search, sometimes to other things. Thanks in advance for any help.
Try
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
or
Use the free versions only
Both are Norton compativle so you might want to keep them on the desktop for future use

YAY, I was creating instructions for this, but one less for me now.

Did I get in the way again? If so I apologize.
Any advice as to how I can distinguish between things I might be able to assist the user in removing and those that require your expertise?
I really don't like getting in your way or preventing users from getting the help they need by providing incorrect advice.
Thanks
Yours now, Hope it is nothing more than like your troublesome (hehe) PUP. Try not to cause Windows not to startup for a user again.

Dave, thanks for the suggestion. I ran both scans and got rid of some tracking cookies and some detected programs but nothing to do with the redirect virus. When I Google "redirect virus click.livesearchnow.com", I get over 30K hits, it seems to be a common problem. Do you think anyone at Norton would work with me to get a fix for this? Thank you for your work on this.
It has been a few hours, if you get no reply for malware
the following places may be able to provide assistance
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/

One Forum only

I am aware there are other places on the web where one can get help with virus. I just wanted to see if there is any chance for a 10 year customer of Norton to get help with viruses from the Norton community.
If Dickevans does not give any more help or someone else, then you will have to go to a protected forum like Bleeping Computer Malware removal board.
Good Luck

You can show the contents of the file name of the host?
located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
file open notepad
I give advice to download the Norton Power Eraser.

Do not follow any instructions from the thread PRIOR quoted. As the first lines of Quad's reply in that thread, it is only for that specific computer. If you try to use the instructions in that thread you may cause more trouble than you now have.
You might try a full system scan in Safe Mode. That way the malware is not hiding behind running Windows processes.
You should probably try one of the other malware sites Quads noted above, as most of us here have none of the knowledge required to help as Quads does.
This is placed on a thread first up for a REASON
ANY other user other than the thread starter is not to use any instructions, scripts or proceedures, The work though in cleaning a system is individual and only for that system due to a number of factors.
Unfortunately, with the amount of threads means the waiting time is longer, Norton continually Blocking files won't hurt your system but is is just annoying, Please wait and be patient. I am trying to keep up, spending hours here to script and clean machines on a first come/first served basis. If you or someone adds to your thread It will be pushed back in line due to the new update. I use the boards in reverse to what is seen
Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
- We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Do as the instructions ask nothing extra or run things twice
- If I ask a Question just answer it, don't run anything unless it states.
- Major steps used:
1. Find
2. Break
3. Destroy
4. Cleanup (including system as a whole)
Please read every post completely before doing anything.
- Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
- Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forum, (sometimes
)
- Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
