I helped out a family friend with removing maleware and viruses on their laptop. They basically were online and had no protection, even Windows firewall was disabled. Anyway as a temporary fix, I installed Comodo Firewall and Avast Anti-Virus(downloaded on USB stick). Now she wants to have Norton Internet Security instead. I was wondering if I can purchase it on her behalf by maybe downloading it to a USB stick? I don't want that laptop to connect to my internet and I can't go to their house. How would I go about doing this?
Two issues here:
Yes you can buy for her but installing it without going to the PC might be a little more difficult unless she is reasonably able to handle installing and activating. Can you comment on that?
Before installing Norton (or any other brand for that matter) you need to uninstall Comodo and Avast and clean up after them.
Here is a link to instructions and the tool for Comodo:
Note down in the thread that the developer says: << As a Reminder: This is not to replace the built-in Uninstaller (Please Run The Built-In Uninstallers First!) >>
Before giving you the link for instructions and the tool for Avast can you tell me which version you downloaded and installed? I would guess V6 or V7 ?
After cleaning up then you would proceed to install in the normal way and set up a MyNortonAccount for her with her email address and password. But how best to do this remotely is a little more complex.
We can certainly give you a link that she can use to download the installation file and then install it and this would give her 7 - 15 days of free trial during which she could either buy a copy retail in a store (often cheaper than online from Norton) and uses the Key that comes with it to activate it, or she could go on line to Norton and buy from them upon which they would send her a keyu by email.
What makes most sense to you? Biggest problem is the uninstalling and cleaning up if you cannot do it.
ok, so my hubby wants me to buy NIS 2012 and put it on a usb thumbdrive, then he will take to her to install. If I do this, how can we get the Norton product under her name(if we are the purchasers). Thanks for the install info, I've already have it.

If you buy it retail in a store or on line from a reputable source like that South American river rather than from Norton online, the question of who bought it does not enter into it -- anyone can buy a present, even software, for someone.
What is important is that when asked to create a Norton account on line you use her email address and let her chose the password (and rememberthem!). Then she has control over it and will get nagged about renewing and so on. If it is a 3 PC version and she is only using one computer she can allow others to use the remaining two activations (she can't daisy chain them to get 3 years on one) but if she does then they will have to have access to her MyNortonAccount using her ID and her password so she may not want to.
If you are sure she will only ever have one PC then you can shop for a 1 PC version and save a few dollars.
Don't forget the uninstall and cleanup of Comodo and Avast before installing Norton .....
Note that if you do buy a disk version it will be about 9 months out of date and, especially if it a computer without a CD/DVD drive, you can download NIS 2012 from here:
New NIS 2012:
Click on this link -- NIS 2012 This will download a single file of around 100MB which you should save on your hard drive where you can use it again if necessary -- Do not select Run but use Save when asked and remember where you put it!
Then he can copy it to a thumbdrive to take to your friend. It will be much more uptodate than the disk version but should still be LiveUpdated manually with a rebooot inbetween until it says you are fully uptodate.
I bought one for a friend yesterday from Amazon.
If your in the US you should check it out, it's a very good price.
Look for
Norton Internet Security 2012 3User [Download]
by Symantec Digital Software
(It may be inappropriate to the other retailers if I posted a link or gave a price).
I got the activation key in about a minute and a link to the download.
Dave
Dave,
AMOI How uptodate was that download? Presumably not the original issue?
I see there is a 1PC version but it's shipped and not from third parties which on one occasion let me down badlyso your 3PC deal is really good even if you do not use the other 2 activations.
There are some "Sponsored Links" and one needs to be careful since they go to a Symantec website at a price we normally see there.
I actually didn't download it from there Hugh, I had the current version here already.
I just went into my Amazon history and it's in my "amazon digital library" alomg with my reciept and record of the key.
The download it has for me in there is the Norton Downloader setup.
If anyone wants the full download it may be easier to get it here
But it was a very good price without having to deal with rebates or any other nonsense and I got the key in about a minute.
Dave
Thanks for the background.-- it's ages since I bought software from that source (you may have missed my earlier reference to a South American River .... <g>)
